The wedding cake has come a long way in recent years. It has become part of the styling of your big day as much as any other elements. But the best thing about it is that it’s edible of course. More importantly, your cake should also taste as good as it looks. So let’s have a look at the wedding cake trends for 2018.

1- Metallics

Metallics are still going strong with the growing popularity of rose gold in 2017.Rose gold is still top of the metallics featured on wedding cakes, closely followed by gold. Pair metallic with any colour way to add the ‘wow’ factor to your cake.

2-  Geometric

As with current architecture, interiors trends, geometrics are currently all the rage. Think of geometric jewellery accents and 3D folded wafer paper as alternatives to the traditional flower decorations.

3- Celestial

The trend for all things celestial has grown recently and wedding cakes depicting the sky and stars are a big favourite right now. Hand-painted and airbrushed cakes effects are used to get this look and sculpted chocolate can add a modern twist as a totally edible decoration.

4- Drip

It’s come a long way, but the drip is here to stay. From patisserie style buttercream cakes topped with macarons and other sweet treats, to opulent, fully iced gold painted drip wedding cakes, there really is no stopping the drip cake craze, it just looks so delicious!

5- Tropical

I’m happy to say that the tropical theme is still very much here! Lovers of flamingos, pineapples and palm leaves will be pleased to know that these can be added to your cake as edible decorations in either sugar, chocolate or wafer paper. The tropical look can be made to look more opulent with the addition of metallics and flowers.

6- Semi naked

A few years ago the naked cake was the most popular type of rustic-style cake, perfect for a barn wedding. Now, it has evolved and the semi-naked cake is here to stay this wedding season. A perfect fit for a festival style wedding, semi-naked cakes can be dressed up or down with any fresh flowers, foliage, patisserie treats, sweets or unusual toppers you like- get creative!

7- Fresh Flowers

The tradition of flowers on wedding cakes is still going strong, but it has changed a lot in the last few years. Budget-conscious couples are choosing fresh flowers over the traditional sugar flower to also get the cake to really tie in with the rest of their styling. Your cake maker can work alongside your florist to set up your cake with flowers or dress the cake table with foliage. And why wouldn’t you? Fresh flowers really do add colour and life to even the simplest cakes, making them the stylish centrepiece.

8- Gold leaf

If metallic remains on this list for 2018, then gold leaf specifically needs a spot here in its own right. Adding that extra luxurious look and bringing a shine that an edible paint simply can’t, the gold leaf can be used to give simple gold accents on a semi-naked tier or to cover a whole tier to make a statement. I think it looks best when used with bright, bold colours and summary statement florals.

9- Figs

With the naked cake came the use of fresh fruit on a cake; raspberries, blackberries with gold accents, and then the idea of figs on a cake came along. They just make a cake look so good; sliced open and placed on a drip cake or semi-naked cake. With most shops now stocking figs all year round, there is also no need to worry whether your wedding is in fig season!

10- Chocolate forms

Waves, twists, shards and spheres; all these chocolate forms have come with the evolution of the dripping cake from cake trend-setting countries such as Australia and Russia. Chocolate is a versatile and delicious way to add decorations to your cake. Whilst sugar flowers are technically edible, chocolate is sure to not only impress your guests but make them happy eating it too.

11- Succulents

With many couples opting to have more green foliage and fewer flowers recently, succulents and cacti are still very popular. Succulents come in an array of amazing greens, greys and purples and are also a great idea as centrepieces in simple concrete pots. Your cake can reflect this and cake makers can use either real or sugar succulents on your cake. Or why not have mini edible sugar succulent cakes as an edible table centrepiece instead?

12- Conclusion

The traditional wedding cake is still with us, but with a contemporary and stylish twist to suit a venue and occasion.

With wedding cakes makers now having so many options of ingredients to use and couples really wanting their day to be completely unique, your cake can now really be a reflection of your own individual style, taste and personality
