Friday 27th July, London, UK: Classic British cuisine you’d find on a pub menu tops the list of ‘last suppers’ Brits would want to eat before they die, according to research from new life-curation website, wishLockr.

The results show that over half of Brits (53 per cent) would choose a traditional ‘pub grub’ dish. Of these, a roast dinner with all the trimmings comes out as the most popular final meal choice (16.2 per cent), followed by steak and chips (14.2 per cent), fish and chips (11.4 per cent) and a ‘Full English’ fry-up (11.2 per cent).

While traditional British grub dominates the top 10, there are some surprises, with a KFC bucket of chicken in eighth place and a McDonald’s meal coming in at ninth, revealing an indifference among Brits towards finer dining.

Looking across the genders, men show a penchant for hearty, high-cholesterol classics such as steak and chips, a KFC bucket of chicken and a ‘Full English’ fry-up featuring in their top five. For women, a roast dinner with all the trimmings is the most popular choice followed by Chinese food and pizza.

The list reaffirms some classic regional stereotypes as one in ten Scots (12.3 per cent) would choose haggis with neeps and tatties as their last meal, placing it as the fifth favourite meal in Scotland – the only region where haggis features in the top five. The north east takeaway classic, The Parmo, also made an appearance in the list among people in that region.

The data reveals some interesting differences in the palettes of different generations. Whereas over-55s would be content with either a hearty roast dinner or steak and chips, young people aged between 16-24 admitted they crave pizza the most with ‘a Nando’s’ also featuring in their top ten.

The research has prompted debate about how well our friends and family know us and our final wishes such as what final meal we’d want before we die. A whopping 63 per cent of Brits admit they have no idea what their loved ones would want when they die and a further 65 per cent have never discussed their own wishes with those close to them.

Karen Nicholson, Founder, wishLockr, said: “Whether it’s choosing to have the cheekiest of cheeky Nando’s as your last meal, or deciding on an Only Fools and Horses-themed funeral, it’s important to have a healthy attitude towards dying. We encourage people everywhere to think and talk about their final wishes, even if it’s deciding between fish or steak with chips as your last meal! On wishLockr, you can document all the aspirations you have for your life, and after your death.”
