Los Angeles, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that it is investigating six areas of innovation as part of the selection process for the 2025 Scientific and Technical Awards, which will be presented on April 28, 2026.
The Scientific and Technical Awards Committee is reviewing potential breakthroughs in:
- Small pyrotechnic devices safe for use near cast and crew
- Layered shading systems for computer-generated imagery
- Software suites for stop-motion photography
- Systems enabling custom art styles in animated films
- Automated speech restoration tools
- Conform management and sound auto-assembly software
“These investigations reflect the remarkable innovation seen in this year’s applications,” said committee co-chairs Darin Grant and Rachel Rose. “We’re excited to explore the novelty, impact, and adoption of these technologies.”
The Academy is inviting additional submissions from individuals and companies with relevant achievements. The deadline for entries is Monday, September 8, 2025, at 5 p.m. PT.
Once the investigations conclude, the committee will vote on recommendations for the Academy’s Board of Governors, which will make the final decision on awards.
