Peru takes immense pride in its rich history, millenary culture, and enduring traditions.

ALPACA DEL PERU FASHION SHOW Bern, Switzerland

Ancient Peru boasts a rich textile tradition, celebrated notably through alpaca wool. A longstanding legend tells of the alpaca’s divine origin, while modern Peru continues to recognize its cultural and economic significance, as reflected in “National Alpaca Day” since 2012. Breeding and using alpaca fiber support over 120,000 families in Peru’s High Andean regions, with events like the Peruvian Embassy’s alpaca fashion show in Switzerland highlighting its international appeal and sustainable impact. This event, featuring renowned designers like Sumy Kujon and brands like MAKUMAYU and ASHKA, showcased alpaca-based clothing and accessories, accompanied by Peruvian music and gastronomy.

The following are the main brands participating in the fashion show:

MAKUMAYU: Founded in Switzerland in 2011, the brand draws upon the legacy of four generations of the Palaco family from Arequipa, Peru, who have been dedicated to the alpaca wool trade since the early 20th century. MAKUMAYU transcends being merely a company; it serves as a cultural and knowledge-based bridge between Peru and Switzerland. The company envisions itself as a facilitator of cultural and knowledge exchange between the two nations. By collaborating closely with Peruvian producers in the highland regions, MAKUMAYU strives to enhance production in Peru and ensure that value is directly generated within the country.

SUMY KUJON: For 23 years, SUMY KUJON has been dedicated to preserving and promoting traditional Peruvian techniques, carrying the mission of safeguarding and celebrating Peru’s cultural heritage. Their collections utilize indigenous natural fibers, such as baby alpaca, alpaca, and other high-quality Peruvian fibers, reflecting their commitment to excellence and sustainability. The brand has showcased its work at prestigious fashion weeks, including New York, Hong Kong, Milan, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, Beijing, Shanghai, Sao Paulo, and Mexico City.
