Promising new research published in Food and Function. the journal has shown how blueberry consumption can help to keep your heart healthy and lower the risk of heart attacks. The research found that blueberries are a rich source of anthocyanins which are associated with a reduction in the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. In particular, the beneficial effects of blueberries and their polyphenols (compounds providing their colour) help boost flow-mediated dilation, the process of arteries dilating and adapting when blood flow increases.

The British Heart Foundation reports that there are 7.4 million people living with a heart of circulatory disease in the UK and 470 people die from the condition each day.

Dr Emma Derbyshire, Public Health Nutritionist and adviser to British Summer Fruits commented; -“We’ve known for a while that blueberries are bursting with nutrients and contain a high level of antioxidants but this new research is really exciting. Everyone should snack on blueberries to help keep their heart healthy. The good news is that Chilean blueberries are now in season and available to buy from supermarkets around the UK.”
