‘Bros’ is laugh out loud funny but this gay rom-com is full of cliches and by the end you will no longer be routing for the main star, who also wrote and produced it.
Billy Eichner, a gay comedian who rose to fame as creator and host of the online hit ‘Billy On The Street’ seems to have written ‘Bros’ as a vanity project to exploit his own personal life and dating experiences.
Billy plays Bobby (not sure why Eichner didn’t just call his character Billy) who is a successful podcaster as well as the director of the soon to be open New York City LGBTQ+ museum. He’s very single but one night he locks eyes with a hot man on a very crowded dancefloor full of other hot sexy shirtless men (Bobby is not shirtless). The hot man is the very sexy Aaron (very sexy Luke McFarlane) who appears to be physically and emotionally available and is only into three ways.
So without saying what happens next you can only guess, the script is that predictable. Even more so when there is drama getting more funding for the museum that practically wastes a cameo by Debra Messing – the iconic Grace from ‘Will & Grace.’ But of course we can figure how it all is going to work out.
But it’s one cliche after another (thropples, gay couples having babies, stereotypical queers and transgenders) where Bros throws nothing new at us. But the jokes do land, unfortunately by the end of the movie you just don’t get why Aaron choses to be with the whiny Bobby (and they don’t have onscreen chemistry), and understandably this film did flop at the U.S. box office, though it might get a chance at a second life on cable and streaming. This film was called a ‘big old mess’ by the Independent, but it’s really not that bad, but just don’t count me in as a Bro.
