To celebrate International Women’s Day 2022, Moving The Needle (MTN) – the educational support group – will co-host a ‘Change The Record’ event with The Ministry and Cactus City Studio at The Ministry SE1, from 5.30-11:30pm on Wednesday 9th March. The event is designed to meet this year’s IWD theme to help #BreakTheBias on gender in the UK music industry. Cocktails provided by Shake Baby Shake.
Performing live will be upcoming female artists, Izzi de-Rosa, Rosa Cecilia, Vimbai-Rose and Sophie Frear with DJ sets from Siggy Smalls and Sarah Bo Parker. The event will celebrate MTN’s achievements to date, and underscore the need for faster change towards gender parity in the UK’s highly valued and valuable industry, where diversity matters.
Women in music are still earning just 73% of what men are paid according to figures published by 8 major music businesses. Meanwhile, findings from the 2020 UK Music Diversity Report show that despite the fact women hold 65% of entry level jobs in music, only ⅓ are in senior management roles, of which, only 2% are held by women who are African or Afro-Caribbean (see A Seat At The Table). The Global Gender Gap Report of all industries shows that, on current trends, gender parity won’t be reached for 99.5 years: Depressingly, our children are unlikely to witness it. The event’s organisers point out that the UK’s forward-thinking music industry should help to buck that trend and #BreakTheBias.
