More sonically adventurous than his previous album, Everyone’s Got A Camera begins and ends with straightforward songs for a world in reckoning. In between is a musical treatise for an age in flux that is as daring as it is profound. From 1960s-tinged rock & roll to quasi-trap, with nods to the contemporary folk and acoustic music for which he is best known, Poe’s new songs take on the handoff between this century and the last, surveillance culture, and the ongoing battle between fact and opinion with a plain-spoken philosopher’s wit, ultimately delivering a selection of tracks with complexity, variety, and faultless songwriting.

The album’s title track and lead single ‘Everyone’s Got A Camera’ is a prime example of Poe’s work, biting commentary on modern life delivered over a delicate, musically warming backdrop of picked guitars, subtle splashes of piano and beautifully placed drums and bass which enter and exit freely creating a soundscape akin to that of Sufjan Stevens. Poe’s silky, breathy lead vocal glides over the track with effortlessly catchy vocal lines that linger well after listening.

Talking about the album Poe explains: “These songs are like wild animals hearing a drone overhead – A culture that declares art to be disposable will get disposable art.

This album offers critique without condemnation. Any lament about what has passed recognizes that it has, in fact, passed. The rest encourages a sort of revolutionary stamina, we should not entrust our shared cultural heritage to executive robots.

There’s a difference between art and entertainment. It’s not to say that one is greater than the other, that art can’t be entertaining or entertainment can’t be arty. But there is a difference. The best pop lives where art and entertainment intersect.”

Having toured the world with Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Tori Amos, and many more. A composer fellow of the Sundance Institute, his work features in numerous film, TV, dance and theatre projects, official selections of the Sundance Film Festival. Songs written by David Poe have been performed by a wide array of artists and recorded by producers including T-Bone Burnett, Larry Klein, Buddy Miller, and Dave Sitek. He has also produced recordings for other artists, including Regina Spektor and Kraig Jarret Johnson as well as serving as the sound engineer at CBGB’s 313 Gallery before signing with Sony/Epic.

With acclaim including Rolling Stone, The Independent, Exclaim, PopMatters and Paste Magazine (to name just a few) the new album is once again set to thrust the singer-songwriter into the limelight. In September, Poe is set to join David Bowie saxophonist Donny McCaslin and his band to sing Bowie’s final masterpiece Blackstar in its entirety with the Charlotte Symphony before heading out on a co-headlining US tour with Blake Morgan throughout October.
