Get ready for a toe stomping and knee slapping good old time at Dolly Parton’s version of ‘A Christmas Carol’.
Easily titled ‘Dolly Parton’s Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol’ the show is Parton’s twist on the old favorite Christmas tale, but of course set to country music.
Don’t expect Parton to be in the show, but she’s there in spirit, and song. Of course the music is hers, and the story is Charles Dickens.
Set during the 1930s in the Great Smoky Mountains of east Tennessee, this new production of the old tale imagines Ebenezer Scrooge as the owner of a mining company town, where his callous greed blinds him to the joys and gifts of the season.
As a Christmas Eve snowstorm approaches, Scrooge is visited by three ghosts who compel him to see life anew and discover that love is the greatest and most precious gift we have.
Robert Bathurst plays everyone’s least favorite fairy tale character, he’s miserable, old, very cheap but very rich. He won’t even spend an extra penny for heating!
All cast are actually good, and for a bit over two hours, you will forget about the high cost of your energy bills and you’ll also forget some, but not all, of your troubles. Sit back, stomp your toe, and clap along to the music!
Combining Partons acumen for storytelling and song writing and Dickens talent for writing this play (many centuries ago) and you’re bound to have a good ole time at this show.
By the end of the show you’ll want to pick up a banjo, put on a cowboy hat, put a long straw through your teeth, and get on stage to join along. It’s a grande ole time.
