FAB UK review:
Yes there is a wedding but it is a sidebar in a film that has way too many plots (and plot holes) and an extremely large cast of characters that makes this film a Greek tragedy
Trying to squeeze the last of the lemon juice from the franchise (though I don’t remember ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’),
writer, director and star Nia Vardalos has too many fingers in the feta, and obviously has drunk too much ouzo to put a coherent and structured film together. And to even believe that it’s produced by Tom and Rita Hanks is even more shocking.
Toula’s (Vardalos) father has passed away so she’s on a mission to find the three friends her father grew up with on a small Greek island. While her mother (a wasted Lainie Kazan) babbles on at home with dementia, Toula whisks the entire family off to said island that appears to be uninhabited save for an old woman with a son (we can easily figure out who the son belongs to).
Meanwhile Toula’s creepy and single brother Nick (Louis Mandylor) has brought his fathers ashes with him to bury in an old tree his father used to go to. Toula’s daughter has issues of her own, and one unexplained young man joins them and they are instantly smitten (can we expect ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 4’? – hope not!). Then there is the aforementioned wedding between two minor characters that takes place at the end as a tick the box plot device, and all of this makes the film disjointed and a mess, and to cap it off the bride is not even Greek! At least we are treated to beautiful scenery but it’s not enough and we are left with a dizzying mess.
