Ryan (Lewis Ian Bray) is a young adult struggling with literacy, leading to numerous social challenges that have hindered his personal and professional development, but when his friend Tyrone (James Nelson-Joyce) becomes his unexpected mentor, his story takes a hopeful turn. Rhys Chapman’s heartfelt film RYAN CAN’T READ is a compelling exploration into a struggle that 8 million adults in the UK face and is a triumphant story demonstrating the power of the human spirit. Produced by the Oscar-winning Slick Films with Rachel Shenton as one of the executive producers, this emotionally charged film has qualified to be considered for the 2025 Oscars®.

“Very touching and an important story to tell” – Ken Loach

Director and co-writer Rhys Chapman first came onto the scene with WONDERKID, the short film campaign challenging homophobia in football. The project first gained widespread attention after launching a crowdfunding campaign with the help and support of Sir Ian McKellen. WONDERKID premiered at the Raindance Film Festival before receiving its television debut with Sky Sports. After holding over 100 screenings with organisations in football, including one special underground LGBT event in Russia, the film was launched online and has enjoyed over a million views to date. WONDERKID is available to view on demand.

Co-writer and star, Lewis Ian Bray is a neurodivergent actor and writer involved in a new Channel 4 drama series titled PATIENCE. Lewis was awarded the ShortShort Film Festival International Best Actor award in Tokyo for his performance in RYAN CAN’T READ.

James Nelson-Joyce is a British actor from Liverpool known for his powerful on-screen presence and compelling portrayals in both television and film. Born and raised in Merseyside, he began acting at a young age and is widely recognized for his performances in popular British TV dramas, including THE OUTLAWS, where he starred alongside Christopher Walken and Stephen Merchant, and TIME, in which he acted alongside Sean Bean and Stephen Graham. He has also appeared in THE VIRTUES, a critically acclaimed series by director Shane Meadows, where his raw performance brought him significant acclaim. Joyce will also star in the upcoming Disney+ original A THOUSAND BLOWS as well as the upcoming season of BLACK MIRROR.

From producer Bryony Pulizzi, previous work includes 2022 BAFTA shortlisted ROY from Academy Award® winning production company Slick Films. Bryony is currently in post-production with projects from director Shane Meadows. Executive Producers include Oscar-winning duo Chris Overton and Rachel Shenton.
