Instagram fashion and beauty blogging sensation, Dana Rae Johnson, is a young woman of influence. At just 20 years of age, she has created a loyal following of 227,000 fans and her number of followers increases every week.
Dana actively works on her photoshoots and Instagram account while studying full-time. Modelling everything from sportswear, beachwear and casual wear to wedding dresses, Dana’s stylish posts attract worldwide attention.
Can you describe your journey from school to what you are doing now?
I opened my Instagram account a couple months after I graduated from high school and started doing photo shoots about a year after that. The first time a photographer asked to shoot with me (@shootsydney), I almost said “No” because I have always been such a shy person. Fortunately, my parents encouraged me, saying it would help build my confidence – and they were right. From there, I have gained more opportunities and experience.
What is your secret to gaining such a large number of followers?
I honestly don’t know. I have just been incredibly fortunate to have the opportunity to work with so many amazing brands and photographers.
Did you set out to become an influencer?
I never even considered becoming an “influencer” and I still don’t think of myself as one; I just fell into it.
Is Instagram your main platform? If so, why?
Instagram is the only social media platform I actually use. Since I have had many opportunities and positive experiences on there, I’ll continue using it.
Who is your audience?
I don’t think there is a specific audience; I know I have people of all ages and from all over the world on my Instagram account.
How do you separate your private life from your Instagram persona, or are you one and the same?
For the most part, I think I am the same person on Instagram as I am in real life. The only noticeable difference is my confidence level. I am normally very quiet and reserved but I feel more confident in front of the camera and I think that shows in my photos.
Has being an influencer changed your life? If so, in what way?
I feel the work I have done through Instagram has definitely helped me grow as a person. Being surrounded by people who believe in me, even when I don’t believe in myself, has inspired me to be a better version of myself.
What is the best part of being an influencer?
I love being able to meet and work with so many talented and passionate people.
How do you maintain your authentic voice while working/partnering with brands?
By ensuring that I only work with the people and brands that I believe in, I am able to stay true to myself with my account. I think companies appreciate that I genuinely love what they are doing.
What advice do you have to people who are trying to gain a following on social media?
Be yourself! Followers and ‘likes’ are not nearly as important as producing content you believe in and having fun while doing it.
Are you always into the latest fashion craze?
I don’t always wear what is in style but rather what suits my personality. I love girly clothes; anything lacy and sparkly. I have been lucky enough to be a FashionNova ambassador for the past nine months, which makes it so much easier for my shoots, and I get to wear clothes I really love.
Can you describe your ‘average’ week?
Typically, my week consists of a mix of university work, photoshoots, posting on Instagram and spending time with my family.
Where do you live?
I was born in South Africa but my family migrated to Australia when I was three years old. I have lived near Sydney ever since.
What three words would you use to describe yourself?
Passionate, dedicated and compassionate.
What are your hopes and dreams?
I am a very family-oriented person, so my biggest dream is to have kids someday. Aside from that, it is important to me that I have a career where I can help people, which is why I am studying to be a speech pathologist. Ideally, I want to specialise in helping young children overcome speech impediments.
