“My statement piece is always my shoes” says DOSH
What made you first become a model?
I’ve always been obsessed with fashion, always loved to take pictures. So one day I decided to just go for it. I started with promotional modeling, which gave me the opportunity to meet different photographers who then helped me connect to larger fashion opportunities.
How did you feel when you did your first ever fashion show/photoshoot/age?
With my first fashion show/photo shoot,I was 19 and I was very nervous. I was working with a bunch of models who had been in the industry for a long time and know how to own a runway, while I on the other hand was still in the process of perfecting my own unique walk so it was definitely intimidating at first. But as soon as I got in front of the camera/on that runway, it felt like home. It was empowering.
Who was your role model as a child, and how did that help in being a model?
My role model was my father; he told me from day one that I should be a model, that I had a unique look of versatility.
What has been your favorite shoot/campaign/work to date?
My favorite shoot was the ethnic hair color campaign for Lorel Paris. It was what I would describe as my breakout moment; it was the first time I had even seen myself on a huge poster and in a magazine.
What did you parents first think of you being a model and were they supportive?
They have always been very supportive and push me to do more and to conquer every challenge that comes my way.
If you were not a model what other professor would you have been doing instead?
I would be in health care because I have always had a passion for helping others.
How do you cope under the pressure of being a model?
Just being close with my family, especially with my sister; she gives me a calming effect especially during photoshoots.
What you do in your spare time?
In my spare time I enjoy relaxing with my two young sons, watching them grow and explore life.
How would your friends/family describe you in three words?
Determined. Ambitious. Selfless.
How would you describe yourself in one word?
Focused.
Which fashion magazines/website/blogs/catalogs do you visit most often?
My top magazines (its so hard to narrow them down) would have to be Vogue—love it—Chicago Fashion Magazine, and W Magazine. And currently my favorite blog is Micahgianneli.com;I absolutely lovethe simplicity and elegance she incorporates into each of her photos to show off the latest trends.
What is fun and rewarding about modeling?
Its fun because you can bring an image to life and tell a story; and that in itself in rewarding because you are helping an artist—the designer, the photographer—personify their inspiration and creativity.
What do you dislike about modeling?
Although the industry has come a long way in regards to breaking away from the stereotypical “model image”, the demand placed on models to have and project a “perfect” image still lingers and I think it can cause added stress.
How do you prepare for a modeling shoot?
Music! It helps not only motivate me, but also gets me pumped up to give 110%
How would you describe working with a photographer?
With any photographer you have to have a working connection; communication is key! Knowing what they are looking for in the different poses, expressions and overall mood can be a workout at times, but once you set up that communication, shoots can flow almost seamlessly.
What does fashion mean to you?
Fashion gives me life! It’s exciting, fun, vibrant;it explores creativity, mixing color, fabric and pattern to create wearable art.
If a young girl/boy wanted to be a model what would your advice be for them?
Never stop at no! If it is truly your passion and goal to be a model, don’t stop at the first rejection. Because with hard work and perseverance you will get that yes!
