UK: Thursday 20 August 2026 – Today Trifilm Studios, The Bea Company and Journeyman Pictures are delighted to announce that their feature documentary KIKUYU LAND directed by Andrew H. Brown (Between the Rains, When Lambs Become Lions) and Bea Wangondu will be released in UK cinemas from 2nd October. The film exposes how British colonial land seizures between 1895 and 1963 displaced indigenous communities from fertile ancestral soils to build massive, highly profitable tea plantations currently run by global multinational conglomerates.

KIKUYU LAND had its World Premiere at Sundance Film Festival where it was in competition for the World Cinema programme. It then played in competition for the F:ACT Award at CPH:DOX; was selected for Movies that Matter and took home the Best Documentary Feature Award at MountainFilm before its UK premiere at Sheffield International Documentary Film Festival.
Set in Kenya’s tea highlands, KIKUYU LAND follows Mr. Mungai as he pursues restitution for land taken from his family. What begins as a personal battle soon reveals a deeper web of historical erasure and the enduring legacy of colonial dispossession that continues to reverberate across generations.

As Mungai’s case gains momentum, it draws in Bea, a local news producer, whose investigation uncovers buried family histories and long-silenced truths. Their paths expose how the legacy of the empire continues to shape lives in the present. Running alongside this struggle is the story of Stephen, the son of a tea worker, whose childhood unfolds within the very plantations at the centre of the dispute. His daily life makes clear that this history is not in the past but ongoing.
Moving between legal struggle and lived memory, the film traces a community’s determination to reclaim what was lost, and asks what accountability looks like when the past refuses to stay buried.

“It means so much to bring this deeply personal story to audiences in the UK. KIKUYU LAND is rooted in experiences and histories that have shaped my family and community. We are thrilled the film will have a UK theatrical release and we’re honoured to share Mr. Mungai’s story with UK audiences,” said director Bea Wangondu.
KIKUYU LAND was produced by Moses Bwayo (Bobi Wine: The People’s President, The Eyes of Ghana), Mike Morrisroe (Between the Rains), Kenyan Producer Joseph Njenga as well as Executive Producer and Impact Strategist Tracy Rector (Remaining Native, Daughters of the Forest) and composed by Nyokabi Kariuki and Keir Vine.
