TOKYO — Japanese pop singer and Harajuku culture pioneer Kyary Pamyu Pamyu has released her latest single, “Pang Pang Pang,” accompanied by a brand-new music video. The heavy, beat-driven electronic track serves as the official ending theme for Pan Dorobo, an anime series based on the hugely popular picture book franchise, which has surpassed 5.5 million copies in print across Japan.
Built around an addictive, rhythmic vocal hook, the release comes as Kyary celebrates her 15th anniversary as a performing artist.
Retro Aesthetics and Easter Eggs: Inside the Music Video
Directed by long-time collaborator Jun Tamukai, the music video centers on a surreal bread-making storyline featuring Kyary alongside a whimsical partner, Kiji-kun (Dough Boy). Set inside a vibrant, vintage-inspired kitchen, the duo perform playful, synchronized choreography set to the track’s driving electronic rhythm.
The project marks the 17th collaboration between the artist and Tamukai, who has directed her videos since her career began. Fans of the singer will also spot hidden visual callbacks to “PONPONPON,” the 2011 breakout hit that launched her international career and has since racked up more than 214 million views on YouTube.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu on the Concept:
“This music video is a slightly strange and cute story where I make delicious bread together with Kiji-kun! Director Tamukai and I have been creating works together since my debut song ‘PONPONPON,’ and we were able to make another fun video this time as well.
Since it’s my 15th anniversary, I’ve snuck in some staging that will remind you of ‘PONPONPON,’ so please go looking for it! I’d be happy if you also paid attention to the dance with Kiji-kun set to the music!”
From Street-Style Icon to Global Pop Ambassador
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu’s rise to international prominence began on the streets of Tokyo’s Harajuku district. Starting out as a teenage model and blogger featured in fashion magazines such as KERA and Zipper, she transitioned into music under the guidance of producer Yasutaka Nakata.
Her major-label debut arrived in July 2011 with “PONPONPON,” establishing her as a defining figure of the kawaii aesthetic. Since her 2013 global debut, she has completed five world tours and built a global fanbase that includes high-profile artist peers like Charli XCX, Ariana Grande, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry.
In 2020, Lady Gaga highlighted Kyary’s global cultural influence by selecting her for the Woman of Choice playlist, an initiative honoring influential women worldwide for International Women’s Day.
