Laura O’Shea’s OSCAR® and BAFTA qualifying short WEDNESDAY’S CHILD shares the heart-breaking and harsh reality of working in Social Care

Oscar and bafta qualifying short wednesday's child directed by laura o'shea

Laura’O Shea’s WEDNESDAY’S CHILD brings to light the harsh reality of working in social care. When Marie faces her first day at work in social care her optimism is soon grounded in reality when she meets a family in crisis and in dire need of help. This phenomenal short film has qualified to be considered for the 95th Academy Awards® after winning the Tiernan McBride Award for ‘Best Short Drama’ at the 34th Galway Film Fleadh, making Laura the first female director to receive the honour in over 20 years.

Marie faces her first day on the job as a Social Care worker. Despite her optimism, a house call to a family in crisis quickly brings her down to reality.

Director Laura O’Shea is an Oscar® & BAFTA qualifying director from Limerick, Ireland. In recent years, Laura was chosen for a prestigious ‘Puttnam Scholarship’, where she workshopped Feature Film development with Lord David Puttnam. She was also selected by Element Pictures and Screen Ireland for a Shadow Director placement alongside Paddy Breathnach on the Britbox/RTÉ series THE DRY. Her most recent directorial work is Oscar® -qualifying WEDNESDAY’S CHILD.

WEDNESDAY’S CHILD is written, produced and stars Caroline Harvey as the role of main character ‘Marie’. The film is Caroline’s debut as a producer and screenwriter. The screenplay was inspired and adapted from the bestselling book ‘WEDNESDAY’S CHILD’ written by author and child protection worker Shane Dunphy. The book is based on true events of his life working with vulnerable families.

Caroline is most known for her role on the RTE Irish TV soap ‘FAIR CITY’ where she played the role of ‘Farrah Clayton’ for five years.

The film is also co-produced and stars Charleigh Bailey. Both Caroline and Charleigh have worked together on the RTE2 pilot HEADCASES written by Charleigh starring alongside each other. Charleigh is the winner of Best Supporting Actress at the 2017 IFTA.

The remarkable cinematography was created by Evan Barry.
