• Male rugby players got more than DOUBLE the matches on Tinder compared to a nonsporting profile
• The ideal sport for a woman looking to get more matches was dance
• A male profile without a mention of sport in its bio got an average of 57 matches, compared to a sportier profile, which averaged at 94.2 matches.
• For women, a non-sport profile got 88 matches, compared to 98.4 matches for a sporty Tinder profile.

On Tinder, men are three times as likely to swipe right for a woman than women are for a man. However, there is a way you can increase your chances of a match for both sexes: by playing the sport.

In an experiment conducted by GolfSupport.com, a female and male Tinder profile was created. Whilst the name, age and photos remained unchanged, the bio was changed several times to include different kinds of sports. The aim was to see if playing sport could increase your chances of a right swipe, and if so, which sport would make you the most attractive to the opposite sex.

GolfSupport.com’s methodology was to swipe right for a total of 200 people for each profile type and leave the profile up for 2 days at a time. The results are in, and it can be revealed that playing certain sports can more than DOUBLE your chances of a right-swipe – especially if you are a man.

On average, our male profile that did not mention any sport in its bio received 57 matches over the course of 2 days. However, for certain sports, those matches increased to as many as 120 in just as many days. On average, a male, sport-playing profile got 94.2 matches in 2 days. Women’s success did not alter that much by mentioning a sport, but it did increase the number of matches. A non-sporty profile got 88 matches in 2 days, and a sporty profile averaged at 98.4 matches, with some sports as high as 118 matches.

The sports favoured by women:

The Tinder experiment has shown that Rugby players are more likely to receive matches than players of any other sport, at 120 matches. That’s 63 matches more than the same profile without the mention of a sport. This was followed by Weightlifters (117 matches), Golfers (104 matches), Swimmers (102 matches) and Boxers (97 matches). Football players were surprisingly left out of the top 5, but still came ahead of Dancers, Gymnasts, Cricketers and Horseriders.

One study into why women might be attracted to sporty men has revealed that “women like athletes because women want to be involved with healthy men. Athletes also show motivation, strength, determination, and teamwork.”

The fact that women like sporty men isn’t just the case on Tinder, but in real life too. The research also revealed that believing they were involved in sports meant women were more likely to associate positive traits with the males in the study, including being ‘more confident’, ‘healthier’, and with a better ‘emotion disposition’.

But what do men think about women who play sports?

The sports favoured by men:

Whilst rugby was the preferred sport of women looking for a potential partner, this was the last choice when men were right swiping. In fact, our female profile got FEWER matches when the bio included “rugby player” at 74, compared to the 88 matches the profile got without a mention of any sport. The sports that seemed to please men the most were dance (118 matches), weightlifting (112), gymnastics (106), cricket (a surprising entry at 105 matches) and football (101).
