US rap artist Redveil (Marcus) is ready to make a splash in 2022 with his lead single “p.g. baby” given updates to classic Just Blaze Roc a fella beats, with a warm crackling samples and impassioned purposeful flows. The smooth and laid-back offering giving praise from artists such as Tyler The Creator and BROCKHAMPTON. Consistently aiming to push boundaries using his distinctly accented verses on a hard melody jazz infused style beat. Redveil, reminds us that his relaxed flows over chilled, non aggressive beats are still fashionable and gives updates to those strong 90’s classics.
His latest project, learn 2 swim, comes in the grand tradition of rap coming of projects but with a distinctly Gen Z perspective. Coming out on Redveil’s 18th birthday, it celebrates the strong Black role models he had in Prince George’s County (p.g. baby), the 2019 health struggles through which he gained a sharpened sense of artistic purpose (“morphine), and the importance of resilience through every phase of life (“automatic”).
Understanding the thesis statement from his song ‘diving board’, an old age concept of a kid overcoming their fear of jumping in the pool is expanded to be a metaphor about propelling yourself into adulthood. Speaking on this, Marcus says “MY saving grace in my DNA: we Black/That Leave me with two choices, get left or rock and adapt,” he raps over a coppice of saxophone and piano. The whole project is a testimony to his talent and intertwines between jazzy soulful hooks to catchy melodic verses.

Redveil, an independent artist released his first foray, Niagara, which created a major buzz on the internet and earned him a devoted fanbase amongst underground and mainstream hip-hop fans alike, due to the infectious soul and jazz influences he pulls from to complement masterful storytelling despite his age. He is comfortable operating in the kind of liminal space between subgenres that usually belong to artists decades his senior. He sounds at home rapping with veterans like Chance The Rapper and Supa Bwe on the police protest song “ACAB”.
