Myra Widiono member of WCCAPR , founder of Rumah Rakuji , the Fashion Designer, always starts with observing aspects of the universal character within the traditional clothes heritage textiles of the Indonesia archipelago especially from the remote areas, one of which is the Palu’e woven and their traditional clothes. The inspiration is to promote the authenticity of the woven, the weavers in the village as well as the magnificent of Palu’e Island.
The Palu’e Woven is the inspiration to be used for Rumah Rakuji collections. The wovens are made by the Palu’e women with authentic Palu’e motifs, worn by the people for traditional costume in tribe’s ritual, now transformed into a fashionable dress through ecofashion design development.
With the Design Concept of Unity, Smart, Simplicity and Gorgeous , Myra created Fashion Collections by combining the traditional Palu’e Warp Ikat Woven using commercial cotton mostly blue black and dark brown as textile base color, red for stripes, orange, yellow and white for the motifs, with other plain soft-coloured organic textiles, such as ulap doyo , linen, cotton and silk, to give Unity in a Fresh Tasteful Look to the fashion industry. About The PALUE WOVEN Community and their Textiles.
Off the coast of northeastern Flores, Eastern Indonesia, lies the small volcanic island of Palué, only 7 km in diameter. The volcano mountain name ROKATENDA rises nearly 3000 metres straight up from the ocean floor. Only the volcano’s tip, the last 875 metres, showing above sea water. To go there from a port in Moumere, the capital city of Sikka Regency, is about 6 hours by speedboat or ferry. Palué has strong cultural and historical links with the small port town of Moumere , in the Flores Island.
The Weaving Communities live in 2 locations: in the Palue Island and in the refugee Vilage Nangahore-Mbolaso near Moumere. That is why, beside the Palue motifs , many Palue Wovens use combination motif of Palue Motif and Sikka Motif.
The PALUÉ Woven is a warp Ikat woven using cotton yarns with mostly natural dyes for the colouring. The traditional colours are black, dark blue or brown black , red, orange , yellow and white for the motifs. The weaving process is through skills of traditional artisans using backstrap loom. The Palue Woven has authentic geometric motifs with particular names and symbols . The configuration of geometrics motif with stripes are designed for each particular type of woven. The rich rhythm of the motif combinations produce an authentic woven, completely different from the Sikka woven. The Palue woven has a dignity appearance, elegance and prestigious in the life of Palue Tribe.
