If you like all things drag, and especially the fantastic Rupaul’s Drag Race, then Rupaul’s Dragcon is definitely for you. It’s all about drag, drag and more drag – a dream come true for drag lovers of all ages.
Rupaul’s Dragcon is part of Rupaul’s magical (and money-making) kingdom where anyone (well mostly men, and mostly gay men) can tuck (!!) into their feminine side and wear a long flowing colorful and glittery dress, hair as big as Marge Simpson, and more makeup than all the makeup in the country of Bimini!
Speaking of Bimini – Baga Chipz was one of the fabulous drag queens in attendance, along with dozens and dozens of drag queen stars from the ah so popular Rupaul’s Drag Race television show. These included: Divina De Campo, Cheryl Hole, Jujubee, Vicki Vivacious, Charity Kase, Ginger Johnson, Nicky Doll, Pixie Polite, Sister Sister, Trinity the Tuck, Venus Everest, Willow Pill – the list, and the flowing dresses, went on and one and……. Dragcon UK 2024 was three days of drag drag and more drag. But unfortunately all of this costs money, and the ‘girls’ are there to make money. Dressing up as glamorous as they don’t come cheap!
On top of the admission charge (various levels including All Star Tickets, General Admission, and Official Party tickets – after hours private events with Friday night a party with the cast of Rupaul’s Drag Race UK Series 5 and Saturday night was a party with the Global Glamazons). Meanwhile there is merchandise galore on sale at Dragcon. From makeup to glitter (lots of glitter) to wigs and costumes it’s all there to turn yourself into one fabulous drag queen. The ‘girls’ have their own booths to earn cash (or taps on their credit card machines). Photos with them in their booths are not free, it costs money, plus the queens sell their own branded merchandise. One queen even had a £20 minimum spend at ‘her‘ booth.
But good for them, strike while the iron is hot. They’ve all become semi famous because of their participation in the global phenomenom of the show while Rupaul is raking in millions (and Emmy Awards) from it all (funnelled into her production company World of Wonder) – it’s only fair the girls get a piece of the pie as well! Darling sell sell sell, the audience will buy buy buy!
It’s all great fun and a great escape from reality.
