Leading up to Valentine’s Day, conversations always focus on loving others but not yourself. When we focus on loving ourselves, our relationships—platonic and romantic—are positively impacted. Putting yourself first can transform your life and help you become the person you’re meant to become.

Self-love has grown in popularity over the last few years with busier lifestyles, increased responsibilities, and more people are choosing to be single. Last year, actress and activist Emma Watson made a statement about being single, calling herself “self-partnered”, which resonated with single women everywhere. Social media influencers preach self-love and self-care to their vast audiences. So, whatreally is self-love, and how can we learn to love ourselves in the best way?

First and foremost, self-love is putting yourself first whether that’s in your personal or professional life. By focussing on yourself and addressing your own needs, you can begin your journey of personal growth. One way to do this is to make sure your job is leaving you fulfilled—are you happy with your salary? Are you proud of the work you put out? Are you following your dreams? If you’ve answered ‘no’ to any of these questions, take a step back and re-evaluate your life. Make the changes that you need in order to grow your own happiness.

Practicing self-care is also a great way of learning to love yourself and accelerating your life. Self-care (AKA self-love) comes in lots of forms, like having a salt bath, putting on a face mask and relaxing, meditating, or even disconnecting from social media. Taking the time to care for yourself is extremely important; if your mental and emotional health is poor, your physical health will suffer too. If you’re not operating at your best or from a place of love, this can jeopardise your relationships.

It’s important to know that self-love comes in many forms, and you have to practice it in a way that works for you. Starting your journey to grow and love yourself can be. Starting your journey to grow and love yourself better can be daunting and difficult, but the rewards are bountiful. It all boils down to developing a self-love practice and making sure you take time out of each day to love yourself more. In business and relationships, any success you experience in life loops back to self-love and self-regard—this is where we become our best selves and make the best decisions.
