SYNOPSIS
A high speed roadtrip through modern creativity, STATION TO STATION is a revolutionary feature comprised of 62 one-minute films highlighting an exciting and eclectic mix of artists, musicians, writers, places, and perspectives.
In the summer of 2013, a train designed as a kinetic light sculpture by artist Doug Aitken traveled from New York City to San Francisco over 24 days. Rolling into ten stations on the route, the train set in motion a series of happenings, each unique to its location and mix of creative participants.
The film includes profiles, intimate moments on the train, conversations, and performances at the happenings: Ed Ruscha describing the discoveries to be made in the great American landscape; Beck performing with a gospel choir in the Mojave desert; Jackson Browne reflecting on the influence of the railroad on his music, and many more.
STATION TO STATION is a kaleidoscope of experience and artistic production, as much as it is a story of our evolving creative culture.
DOUG AITKEN – BIOGRAPHY
Doug Aitken is an American artist and filmmaker. Defying definitions of genre, he explores every medium, from film and installations to architectural interventions. Aitken’s work leads us into a world where time, space and memory are fluid concepts. His films often explore the modern condition, and his transformative installations create immersive cinematic experiences. He has collaborated with numerous artists and musicians, and his work has been exhibited in museums around the world, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Modern Art, the Vienna Secession, the Serpentine Gallery in London and the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris. He participated in the Whitney Biennial and earned the International Prize – Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 1999 for the installation “electric earth”. Aitken received the 2012 Nam June Paik Art Center Prize and the 2013 Smithsonian American Ingenuity Award: Visual Arts.

SUN ARAW
Sun Araw is the alias of Cameron Stallones, an American musician who was previously a member of the band Magic Lantern. He has released several albums of experimental music, including a collaboration with Jamaican reggae group The Congos.
ARIEL PINK’S HAUNTED GRAFFITI
LA-based singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and record producer Ariel Pink and his band play an eclectic mix of psych-pop, indie rock and lo-fi.
BECK
Singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Beck has became well known for creating musical collages of a wide range of styles. His recordings encompass folk, funk, soul, hip hop, alternative rock, country, and psychedelia.
BLACK MONKS OF MISSISSIPPI
Organized by Theaster Gates, The Black Monks of Mississippi is an experimental musical ensemble of close collaborators of the artist whom are often joined by musical monks from around the world.
BLOODBIRDS
This Kansas City three-piece focus on having a good time while playing a mix of post-punk, psychedelic blues andspace rock.
JACKSON BROWNE
The influential American singer-songwriter came to prominence in the 1970s, and his contribution to the genres of rock, country and folk was recognized with his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2004.
CAT POWER
Cat Power is the stage name of Chan Marshall, an American singer-songwriter and musician, known for her haunting sound, soul and scope. Her sound constantly evolves, incorporating punk, folk, blues, soul and electronica.
COLD CAVE
Cold Cave is the moniker for the music of LA-based Wesley Eisold, whose music is described as a collage of darkwave, noise, and synthpop.
THE CONGOS
This Jamaican reggae vocal group have been active on and off since the mid-1970s. They are best known for their Heart of the Congos album, recorded with Lee “Scratch” Perry.
THE CONQUERORS
This Kansas City psych band play live shows that mix maniacal garage punk and psychedelia with cascading percussion, pounding guitar licks, and the occasional gang sing-along.
DAN DEACON
Composer and electronic musician Dan Deacon is renowned for his live shows, where large-scale audience participation and interaction is often a major element of the performance.
THOMAS DEMAND
German sculptor and photographer Thomas Demand makes constructions for the sole purpose of photographing them. Demand builds a full-scale model using colored paper and cardboard, photographs the scene, and destroys the model.
DESTRUCTION UNIT
Destruction Unit is a rock band formed in the desert of Phoenix, Arizona. These radical desert dwellers have built a reputation for both mesmerizing and terrorizing crowds with their sheer power and intensity.
WILLIAM EGGLESTON
The American photographer whose work is characterized by its ordinary subject matter, is widely credited with increasing recognition for color photography as a legitimate artistic medium.
OLAFUR ELIASSON
Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson’s diverse work has been exhibited widely throughout the world. Through his work, Eliasson strives to make the concerns of art relevant to society at large.
SAM FALLS
Using photography, Photoshop, drawing, painting and sculpture to make artworks that combine abstract and figurative images, Sam Falls’ work explores the natural elements, such as the sun and rain, as tools of production.
URS FISCHER
The subversive approach of the prolific Swiss-born artist Urs Fischer is often considered to be influenced by anti-art movements like Neo-Dada, Lost Art, or the Situationist International.

American writer, music critic, and musician Sasha Frere-Jones has written for Pretty Decorating, ego trip, Hit It And Quit It, Mean, Slant, The New York Post, The Wire, The Village Voice, Slate, Spin, and The New York Times.
ELEANOR FRIEDBERGER
Signer-songwriter Eleanor Friedberger went solo with her brand of melodic pop in 2011, after her previous role as one half of the indie rock duo The Fiery Furnaces, along with her older brother Matthew Friedberger.
LIZ GLYNN
This visual artist currently works out of
Los Angeles, producing her sculptural and installation-based work, which often incorporates found objects and materials.CORNBREAD HARRIS
James Samuel “Cornbread” Harris Sr. is a singer and pianist who continues to perform blues and jazz in Minneapolis well into his eighties. He was a performer on Minnesota’s first rock and roll record.
GARY INDIANA
New York-based novelist, playwright, critic, essayist and filmmaker Gary Indiana is perhaps best known for his loose trilogy of books based on notorious criminals. He has also based multiple novels on fictionalized events from his own life and those of his contemporaries.
CHRISTIAN JANKOWSKI
A contemporary multimedia artist, Christian Jankowski largely works with video, installation and photography. He lives and works in Berlin and New York.
AARON KOBLIN
Digital media artist Aaron Koblin is best known for his innovative use of data visualization and his pioneering work in crowdsourcing and interactive film.
LUCKY DRAGONS
LA-based experimental music group consisting of Luke Fischbeck and Sarah Rara —noted for their unusual sound, described as making everyday sounds become alluringly other.
MARK BRADFORD
Born and raised in South Los Angeles, Mark Bradford transforms materials scavenged from the street into wall-size collages and video installations.
GIORGIO MORODER
Giorgio Moroder is an Italian record producer, songwriter, performer and DJ and is one of the principal architects of the disco sound.
THURSTON MOORE
Best known as a singer, songwriter and guitarist of Sonic Youth, Thurston Moore is also a solo-artist, frequent musical collaborator and record producer.
ERNESTO NETO
The Brazilian born artist’s work explores constructions of social space and the natural world by inviting physical interaction and sensory experience. His installations are large, soft, biomorphic sculptures that viewers can touch, sink into, or walk on or through.
NO AGE
No Age is an LA-based two-person experimental punk group consisting of guitarist Randy Randall and drummer/vocalist Dean Allen Spunt.
ED RUSCHA
Ed Ruscha has worked in the media of painting, printmaking, drawing, photography, and film. He achieved recognition for paintings incorporating words and phrases and for his many photographic books, all influenced by the deadpan irreverence of the Pop Art movement.
SAVAGES
An all-girl London-based post-punk revival rock band, formed in 2011 who exploded onto the international scene with 2013’s punishing debut, Silence Yourself.
PATTI SMITH
Fusing rock and poetry, singer-songwriter, poet and visual artist Patti Smith became a highly influential component of the New York City punk rock movement with her 1975 debut album Horses.
MAVIS STAPLES
The American rhythm and blues and gospel singer, actress and civil rights activist began her recording career with The Staple Singers, her family’s band starting in the 1950s.
PAOLO SOLERI
Italian architect Paolo Soleri established Arcosanti and the educational Cosanti Foundation in the Arizona Desert. Through his work, he explored the countless possibilities of human aspiration.
STEPHEN SHORE
American photographer Stephen Shore’s work has been widely published and exhibited for the past forty years. Known for his pioneering use of color in art photography, in 1971 he became the second living photographer to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
SUICIDE
The highly influential American electronic synthpunk musical duo, Suicide, have been intermittently active since 1970 and is composed of vocalist Alan Vega and Martin Rev on synthesizers and drum machines.
THEESATISFACTION
An R&B hip hop duo consisting of rapper Stasia Irons and singer Catherine Harris-White who write, produce and perform their own material out of Seattle.
LAWRENCE WEINER
One of the central figures in the formation of conceptual art in the 1960s, Lawrence Weiner’s work often takes the form of typographic texts.
WHITE MYSTERY
White Mystery is brother-sister rock’n’roll duo Miss Alex White & Francis Scott Key White from Chicago. The sibling duo have written, recorded and played non-stop since their inception in 2008.
YOSHIMIO TRIO
The trio made up of Yoshimi P-We of the Boredoms, Hisham Akira Bharoocha and Ryan Sawyer played at the New York and Pittsburgh Station to Station stops.
