A study by bedroom furnishing gurus Feather & Black has shown us the interior design styles people are favouring at the moment.
As part of their research into what draws guests’ eyes in the home, the most admired interior design styles were shown to be:
- Modern
- Classic
- Rustic
- Coastal
- Scandi
What does this mean for those of us looking to create or maintain a chic interior this year? Let’s break it down.
The top styles are all trends that favour natural materials
The use of natural materials in 2024’s popular styles is great for lots of reasons – a big one being the fact that it will likely lead to more sustainable shopping choices. Not only does furniture made from natural materials such as wood and leather tend to be of higher quality, it’s often timeless in style, meaning your furniture will stay both functional and fashionable for far longer. Vogue agrees, predicting that in 2024 we will start to “wave goodbye to fast furniture.”
There is a focus on being understated yet inviting
Some basic research into any of the top five on Feather & Black’s list could mean being confronted with lots of stone, ashy wood and whitewash. While they differ in the details, their vibes are united by simplicity, functionality, and understated luxury. That might make it sound like these styles run a bit cold, that doesn’t have to be the case. For example, while Coastal design focuses on cool tones, there’s also a big emphasis on comfort, with throw pillows and blankets featuring heavily. Similarly, Scandi takes a pragmatic approach to interior design – and for the Scandinavian countries from where it originated, that means warm lighting (including fireplaces) and snug hygge textiles such as cashmere and lambswool.
Embrace an earthy colour palette
Natural materials and carefully curated cosiness both lend themselves towards organic, earthy colours. The latte makeup trend that started making waves in the second half of last year is also brewing in interior design, embracing tones of cream, beige and warm brown. In fact, soft brown is predicted to be one of the top sofa colours for this year, and an equally organic green is going to be big in the bedroom.
Cut out the clutter
It’s no coincidence that 2024’s preferred styles all lean towards a less-is-more approach. Feather & Black’s research has shown that clutter is one of the first things guests notice upon entering your home, before colour scheme or ambience. If you’ve been putting off a decluttering session it might be time to prioritise it again – but try to keep with the sustainable themes that are leading this year, and do so in an eco-friendly way.

Ultimately your home should be the place where you feel most at ease – whether that means prioritising functionality or fuzzy throw pillows, it’s entirely up to you. Pick a style that enhances your favourite furnishings and personal preferences, and your home is sure to not only reflect your personality, but make your houseguests want to stay forever.
