The 66th BFI London Film Festival, in partnership with American Express, has announced the line-up for the October Film Festival which will shine a light on films from October 5th to 16th.

Best film award at the 66th bfi london film festival

There is a dynamic and vibrant programme of 164 feature films from around the world (including 23 world premieres), and a showcase of international series to experience on the big screen. All feature films and series are being shown in the UK for the first (and sometimes the only) time.

Step into a new dimension of storytelling with LFF Expanded, their programme of immersive art and extended reality (XR). Make sure to also check out their much-anticipated Surprise Film, Screen Talks and their LFF for Free events.

Continue the Festival fun on BFI Player with a curated selection of 20+ features and 15 free short films available until 23 October.

Here are some of the highlights from the programme:

    Opening Night Gala
    Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical
Emma Thompson leads a dazzling ensemble in this rousing big screen adaptation of the smash-hit, Olivier-winning stage musical.

    Closing Night Gala
Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery
More an equal than a sequel, Rian Johnson reunites with Daniel Craig (who reunites with that accent) for a new Knives Out, which will delight fans and newcomers alike.

    American Express Gala
    Empire of Light
Following his BAFTA Best Film winner 1917, Sam Mendes returns with this majestic, personal work, set in a 1980s English coastal town.

    American Airlines Gala
    The Banshees of Inisherin
Martin McDonagh (Three Billboards Outside of Ebbing, Missouri) returns to the LFF with this jewel of a tragicomedy, a shimmering tale of friendship, feuds and Irish identity.

    Headline Gala
BARDO, False Chronicle of a Handful of Truths
Alejandro G. Iñárritu’s follow-up to The Revenant sees him return to Mexico with this ambitious and visually inventive reflection on the ethics and possibilities of filmmaking.

    Headline Gala
    Decision to Leave
In this sublime, Hitchcockian noir thriller from Park Chan-wook (The Handmaiden), a detective gets a little too close to the murder he’s trying to solve.

    Headline Gala
    Living
Based on Ikiru by Akira Kurosawa, Living stars Bill Nighy as a man determined in the time he has left to wake from his slumber and make a mark on the world.

    Headline Gala
    Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio
Carlo Collodi’s dark fable about a naive wooden puppet is presented in dazzling stop-motion animation by Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro, for this World Premiere.

    Headline Gala
    The Son
Florian Zeller directs this blistering adaptation of his acclaimed play, in which a divorced couple struggle to deal with their teenage son’s mental-health crisis.
    The Mayor of London’s Gala
    Till
Chinonye Chukwu returns to the LFF with her stunning second feature about Mamie Till’s landmark fight for justice following the abhorrent lynching of her son Emmett in 1955.

    BFI Patrons’ Gala
    The Whale
Brendan Fraser shines in Darren Aronofsky’s resplendent film about a man trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter before it’s too late.

    Headline Gala
    White Noise
Noah Baumbach’s adaptation of Don DeLillo’s ‘unfilmable’ cult novel is a wonderfully idiosyncratic dark comedy starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig.

    Headline Gala
    The Wonder
Ever-unpredictable, Chilean director Sebastián Lelio ventures to 19th-century Ireland for this domestic psychodrama, which sees religious faith battle against scientific reason.
