On Friday 19th January 2024, Mercury Classics Soundtrack & Score will release the original motion picture soundtrack to poetic British film ‘The End We Start From’. The emotive score is written by award-winning composer and producer Anna Meredith. One of the most sought-after and revered names in contemporary composition, Anna Meredith’s unique sound straddles the worlds of contemporary classical, art pop, soundtracks, techno, installations and experimental rock and is frequently described as ‘uncategorisable’ and ‘genre-defying’.

Of the soundtrack, Meredith says, “I felt clear from the start that the soundworld for‘The End We Start From’ needed to be both intimate and large-scale and felt instinctively clear from the outset that it should be based around flute and electronics. I wanted to give the music the distinctive voice Mahalia Belo (director) was after and thought that working on a breath-focused soundworld would complement the dichotomy between large and small-scale humanity (and water connections!) that the film addresses so well.”
‘The End We Start From’ follows a young family who are torn apart when an environmental crisis sees London submerged by flood waters. As a woman (Jodie Comer) and her newborn try and find their way home, the profound novelty of motherhood is brought into sharp focus in this intimate and poetic portrayal of family survival.
Today sees the release of the first single, ‘Little World’, from the soundtrack. “I loved writing this track.” Meredith explains “It represents a particular moment of both instability and sanctuary, and I knew I wanted it to have an almost detached, clockwork-like feel to work through this moment of cocooning denial. Mechanical flute arpeggios rotate at different speeds and in a separate world to the lower synth material which hints at the reality beneath.” Listen to little World HERE.
Anna Meredith’s music has been performed everywhere from the Hollywood Bowl to BBC Last Night of the Proms to flashmob body-percussion performances at the M6 Services. It has been used in PRADA, Chloe & Fendi fashion campaigns, adverts, films, TV shows, installations, pop festivals, clubs and classical concert halls worldwide and is regularly broadcast on BBC Radio 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6. Her CV features scoring for film & TV for productions ranging from Paul Rudd’s dark comedy Living With Yourself and Bo Burnham’s award winning debut feature Eighth Grade for A24. Anna’s debut album Varmints won the Scottish Album of the Year Award with the follow-up FIBS receiving a nomination for the 2020 Mercury Music Prize.
Directed by BAFTA winner Mahalia Belo (The Long Song), penned by award winning British writer Alice Birch (Lady Macbeth, Normal People, The Wonder) and anchored by a tour-de-force performance from Jodie Comer (Killing Eve, The Last Duel, Prima Facie), the film also features supporting turns from Joel Fry (Cruella, Yesterday), Katherine Waterston (Fantastic Beasts, Inherent Vice), BAFTA nominee Mark Strong (1917, Kingsman), BAFTA award-winning Gina McKee (My Policeman, Line Of Duty), Nina Sosanya (Screw, His Dark Materials) and two-time Academy award nominee and BAFTA award-winning Benedict Cumberbatch.
Joining Meredith on this soundtrack is flautist Daniel Shao (flute and alto flute), flautist Rachel McWhinney, cellist Maddie Cutter and her long-term collaborator, guitarist and producer, Jack Ross.
