The loafer is the shoe of the season, and by December every shop window will have the same pair in it. Sumissura is going the other way: its loafers don’t exist until somebody designs them.

Each pair starts as one of three models, penny, horsebit or tassel, and is then built piece by piece in Sumissura’s online 3D designer. The vamp, the heel cap, the tongue, the saddle, the piping and the back are chosen one at a time. You can choose between an Italian calf leather or an Italian calf leather shine in a matte or a silk-touch finish, Flora leather, suede, waxed leather and patent leather. Six materials in all, each in several shades, and suede alone comes in up to ten. Each piece is chosen separately, so no two pairs need ever be the same.

There is no stock. Every pair is made to order in Spain and shipped within two weeks, from $219.

Patent for the evening, waxed leather for Sunday

The same model changes register with the material. Patent leather for the evening, and for wet fall sidewalks from Seattle to New York: it is highly resistant to water and stains. Waxed leather, slightly tumbled, for the weekend. The details change too: the horsebit comes in gold, vintage brass or graphite, and the sole in black rubber or a lighter EVA Tracker sole.

The gift-list loafer

Shoes are a hard present to get right. The size, the color, the style: too much can go wrong. The Sumissura gift card, printable or sent by email, hands every one of those decisions to the person who will wear them. She designs her own pair, in her own size, from US 3 to 12, with an extra-wide EE fit built on a specially developed last.
