From giving your hair a quick comb on the bus to applying your lipstick on the tram, public displays of application can cause a lot of controversies. But is it really such a big deal?
Exploring the attitudes towards commuter etiquette, Fragrance Direct reveals the UK’s worst cosmetic commuter crimes, who commits the most, along with the passengers most likely to be offended.
The survey of 2,000 commuters revealed that one in three women apply some form of makeup on public transport at least once a week. Commuters in Brighton are the worst offenders, with 63% admitting to spraying hairspray on the way into work at least once But, with 28% of people claiming to be offended by public makeup application, should it be left at home?
Whilst lipstick and mascara were amongst the most acceptable products to be applied on public transport, there are some things that should be kept private.
52% of commuters surveyed believed that both spraying hairspray and plucking eyebrows/nose hair was the most offensive cosmetic crimes.
What’s worse than makeup?
40% said that eating fast food was worse than painting or filing nails, and putting a bag on a free seat was deemed worse than any form of cosmetic application.
Topping the scale for overall commuter crimes was passing gas, with 75% surveyed saying they would be offended if they heard or smelt it.
Whilst putting make-up on during the commute sure may raise a few eyebrows and garner some discerning looks, sometimes there just isn’t any other option.
Celebrity makeup artist, Keira Harrison suggests some tips for applying make-up on the move, ‘Avoid mess on jerky journeys and choose multi-purpose products. Foundation and concealer sticks are much easier to use…Stick to compact beauty essentials- especially mascara… Make sure to carry a mirror for on the move – although a camera phone in reverse can be effective if you’re desperate!”
