After last year’s Italian director, actress and producer Valeria Golino, this year, American actor John C. Reilly is set to preside over the Un Certain Regard Jury, together with French director and screenwriter Alice Winocour, German actress Paula Beer, French-Cambodian director and producer Davy Chou and Belgian actress Émilie Dequenne. John C. Reilly will be in charge of awarding prizes for the Un Certain Regard section, which showcases revelation, art films by young auteurs.
This year, 20 films have been selected, including 8 debut films and 6 by women directors. The 2022 Un Certain Regard top prize went to French directors Lise Akoka and Romane Gueret’s debut feature Les Pires (The Worst Ones).

John C. Reilly has been an actor in theater, film and television for over 35 years. He made his film debut in Casualties of War (1989) by Brian De Palma. That role began a film career with some of the greatest American directors such as Paul Thomas Anderson Hard Eight (1996) Boogie Nights (1997), Magnolia (1999), Terrence Malick The Thin Red Line (1998), Sam Raimi For Love of the Game (1999), Martin Scorsese Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator (2004), Rob Marshall Chicago (2002), Robert Altman A Prairie Home Companion (2006) and Adam McKay Talladega Nights (2006), Step Brothers (2008). Once he established himself at home he then worked with some of the most recognized international filmmakers as well, appearing in We Need to Talk about Kevin (2011) by Lynne Ramsay, in Competition at the Festival de Cannes, Carnage by Roman Polanski (2011), Tale of Tales by Matteo Garrone (2015) also in Competition, The Lobster by Yórgos Lánthimos, winner of the Jury Prize at the Festival de Cannes 2015, Les Cowboys (2015) by Thomas Bidegain and The Sisters Brothers by Jacques Audiard (2018). In 2022 he appeared remotely by Zoom in Stars At Noon by Claire Denis, Grand Prix ex-aequo at the Festival de Cannes 2022. He currently appears in the HBO limited series Winning Time.

Trained at La Fémis, Alice Winocour directed several short films, including Kitchen, selected in Competition at Cannes (2005). In 2011, she directed her first feature film, Augustine, selected for the Semaine de la Critique and nominated for the Best First Film César. Her second feature Disorder, with Matthias Schoenaerts and Diane Kruger, was presented in the Official Selection (Un Certain Regard, 2015). She co-wrote Mustang with Deniz Ergüven, Best Screenplay at the César and represented France at the Oscars 2016, and Cuties by Maïmouna Doucouré. Her film Proxima with Eva Green and Matt Dillon received awards at the Toronto and San Sebastian film festivals (2019). ). In 2022, she co-wrote Lost Country by Vladimir Perišić. Her last feature Paris Memories (2022), shortlisted to represent France at the Oscars, earned Virginie Efira the César of best actress, and makes her win the Alice Guy Prize as best director.

Multi-lingual actress working with so many acclaimed international auteurs at such an early stage of her career, Paula Beer made her awarded debut as a teenager in Poll by Chris Kraus (2010). Other credits include The Dark Valley by Andreas Prochaska (2014), Vier Könige by Theresa von Heltz (2015). Her international breakthrought came in 2016 with Frantz by François Ozon, receiving several nominations and winning the Best Performance Award by an Emerging Actress in Venice. She played the female lead in Le Chant du loup by Antonin Baudry, a critical and public success. In 2020, her performance in Undine by Christian Petzold earned her two coveted awards: a Silver Bear at the Berlinale and Best Actress at the European Film Awards. They are reunited this year in Roter Himmel and the movie gets the Silver Bear 2023. Paula Beer will also star in Stella. A Life. by Kilian Riedhof.

French-Cambodian director and producer Davy Chou broke out with Golden Slumbers (2011), an ode to the golden age of Cambodian film-making that was screened in a number of festivals. After his critically-acclaimed documentary Cambodia 2099 (2014), he brought his first feature film Diamond Island (2016) to the Semaine de la Critique, where it won the SACD prize. Selected for the Festival de Cannes 2022’s Un Certain Regard, Return to Seoul represented Cambodia at the Oscars 2023, and is a continuation of the filmmaker’s attempt to capture the dreams, fantasies and aspirations of youth, set against the most vibrant of backdrops. As well as making films, Davy Chou is a producer. His focus is on producing works by up-and-coming Cambodian filmmakers, and he also co-produced Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle by Arthur Harari, the opening film for the 2021 Un Certain Regard.

First gaining attention in the Dardenne brothers’ Rosetta, Palme d’or at the Festival de Cannes, earning her the Best Actress Award in 1999, she then distinguished herself in different contexts with Brotherhood of the Wolf directed by Christophe Gans (2001), A Housekeeper by Claude Berri (2002), The Very Merry Widows by Catherine Corsini (2003) and The Girl on the Train by André Téchiné (2009). In 2010, she returned to the Festival de Cannes with Franck Richard’s The Pack, a Special Screening. In 2012, she awed Cannes in Joachim Lafosse’s Our Children, selected for Un Certain Regard, which won her the Best Actress Award. After Emmanuel Mouret’s Love Affair(s) (2020 Official Selection), she returned in the critically acclaimed Close by Lukas Dhont, Grand Prix at the 2022 Festival de Cannes.
