19/6/2026 | West Papuan artist Voice of Lele has joined forces with acclaimed activist singer-songwriter Nattali Rize for Border Crosser, a powerful new single exploring identity, belonging, resilience and hope.
Born from Lele’s lived experience as the eldest daughter of the first West Papuan refugee family to settle in Australia in 1988, Border Crosser gives voice to those who have experienced displacement, exclusion and the search for home.
Released during World Refugee Week 2026, Lele said Border Crosser is one of her most personal songs yet. “The song comes from a place deep in my spirit, from knowing what it feels like to be disconnected, silenced, voiceless, and longing for a place to belong.”
“As someone born stateless, this song carries the cries of people all over the world who are still suffering quietly, unseen and unheard.
“I never want to stay silent in the face of injustice. Through music, I want to be part of a voice that brings hope, unity and healing for the next generation.”
The collaboration with Australian Jamaican singer and activist Nattali Rize, marks a meeting of two powerful voices committed to social justice and cultural storytelling.
“Creating this song with my sister Nattali Rize, whose voice has inspired me for many years, felt so deeply aligned – two proud women using our voices with love, urgency and purpose,” Lele said.
Voice of Lele’s music is deeply rooted in West Papuan and Melanesian language, culture and identity. Performing primarily in Melanesian languages, she blends traditional West Papuan influences with contemporary island pop, using music as a tool for cultural preservation and visibility.
Previous releases include debut single Island Proud (2024), a celebration of Pasifika pride sung in Tok Pisin; Jow Manfun (2024), inspired by the legacy of Lele’s father Agustinus Rumwaropen performed in Biak; and E MAMBO (2025), a reimagining of a traditional Melanesian song by late West Papuan cultural leader Arnold Ap. Most recently Lele released KAMAM (2025) and I’m Every Woman (2026).
For more than two decades, Lele has advocated for West Papua while championing diversity and inclusion through music, education and community engagement.
Following performances at major events including Brunswick Music Festival, Vision Splendid and the Australian Open, Border Crosser continues Lele’s mission to elevate Pacific voices and stories on national and international stages.
Border Crosser featuring Nattali Rize will be available on all major streaming platforms from June 19.
