Los Angeles, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 14 groundbreaking scientific and technical achievements, representing 37 individuals, will be recognized at the annual Scientific and Technical Awards ceremony on April 29, 2025, at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures.
This year’s honorees will be celebrated for their significant contributions to filmmaking, with an emphasis on innovations that have transformed the industry. A standout award, the Academy Award of Merit (Oscar® statuette), will be presented to the individuals responsible for the creation and support of captioning technology, which has made films more accessible to audiences worldwide.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang expressed pride in honoring the recipients, noting, “Their work has driven advancements that continue to shape the cinematic experience, enhancing the artistry and innovation within filmmaking.”
Among the technical achievements being awarded are developments in visual effects, fire stunt safety, camera stabilization, and dialogue capture. Technologies such as Ziva VFX’s muscle simulation system, the Wētā FX ML Denoiser, and the Intel Open Image Denoise library have played a crucial role in elevating the quality of visual storytelling. Additionally, innovations like the Steadicam Volt and Ronin 2 gimbal system have revolutionized camera work, offering filmmakers new ways to achieve dynamic, stable shots.
The honorees’ contributions extend beyond visual and safety technologies, with advancements in sound, motion capture, and post-production tools like Disney’s ML Denoiser and the Auto Align Post 2 software, further raising the bar for precision and efficiency in filmmaking.
As part of the Academy’s dedication to celebrating the best in motion picture artistry, these achievements will be formally recognized at the ceremony, showcasing the ongoing impact of technology on the cinematic world.
