Following on from their world preview showings at the 75th edition of the Festival de Cannes 2022, the Official Selection films embarked on a tour around the globe, going from strength to strength in cinemas and awards ceremonies. While we wait to find out what the 76th edition has in store for us, we take a look back over the remarkable journeys undertaken by the films first revealed to us last year on the Croisette. (This article is regularly updated).
A snapshot of the most awarded films
To date, the 2022 Official Selection boasts a grand total of 497 prizes and awards, and over 1,400 nominations around the world.
- Coming top of the charts is Joseph Kosinski’s hotly anticipated Top Gun: Maverick, which had proved a hit at its première in Cannes and has already garnered 67 awards, six Oscars 2023 nominations and four BAFTA nominations.
- With 59 awards and 215 nominations under its belt — including eight at the Oscars — Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis is the 2022 Selection’s second most awarded film. The feature-length biopic recently scooped the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama (Austin Butler).
- Korean director Park Chan-wook returned to Cannes in style in 2022 with his Decision to Leave. After winning Cannes’ Best Director Award, the film now boasts 43 distinctions and titles, and 136 nominations, including a number from the Golden Globes and BAFTAs 2023.

A Selection acclaimed by critics around the world
For yet another year, the French, European and international press gave their stamp of approval to Cannes’ 2022 Selection. EO by Jerzy Skolimowski was crowned Best Foreign Language Film by the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Critics.
The Critics’ Choice Awards, meanwhile, showed their appreciation for:
- Elvis by Baz Luhrmann: 7 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Austin Butler)
- Top Gun: Maverick by Joseph Kosinski: 6 nominations including Best Picture and Best Actor (Tom Cruise)
- Close by Lukas Dhont: Best Foreign Language Film
- Armageddon Time by James Gray: Best Young Actor (Banks Repeta)
- Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund: Best Comedy
In France, the 2022 Official Selection was a roaring success with the Lumières Award, with the Selection’s films winning eight of 13 awards.

The 2022 Selection’s box office success stories
As well as meeting with acclaim in festivals and awards ceremonies, some of the films were box office sensations in France and around the world.
Top Gun: Maverick and Elvis were 2022’s second and seventeenth (respectively) biggest global hits in 2022, and French films managed to make waves too. November by Cédric Jiménez broke through two million tickets sold in France, making it the second biggest box office seller in the country. Masquerade by Nicolas Bedos and The Innocent by Louis Garrel did the country proud too, with over 800,000 and 700,000 ticket sales, respectively. Another stunning surprise came from Dominik Moll’s The Night of the 12th, which was grazing the 500,000-ticket mark by the end of running. As for the 2022 Palme d’Or-winning Triangle of Sadness by Ruben Östlund, it delighted over 550,000 cinema-goers across France.

César Awards – 23 February 2023, Paris
This year, the 2022 Official Selection is dominating the César Awards, with films from Cannes accounting for a full 60 nominations. The Innocent by Louis Garrel and The Night of the 12th by Dominik Moll go head-to-head, with 11 and 10 nominations each.

The Academy Awards – 13 March 2023, Los Angeles
Three films from the 2022 Selection are competing for the 2023 Oscar for Best Picture, the results of which will be revealed during the ceremony on 13 March: Top Gun: Maverick, Elvis and Triangle of Sadness. The films have six, nine and three nominations respectively. Altogether, films from Cannes are represented in 16 categories, with a grand total of 21 nominations.

The British Academy Film Awards 2023 ceremony is due to take place on 19 February, with many films that were first revealed at Cannes 2022 up for awards:

Golden Globes – 11 January 2023, Los Angeles
The 80th Golden Globes ceremony took place on 11 January and saw Austin Butler win the much coveted Best Actor In A Motion Picture Award for his performance in Elvis. Decision to Leave, Triangle of Sadness and Top Gun: Maverick also starred in the line-up of films shortlisted for the Golden Globes.
Goya Awards – 11 February 2023, Seville
The Spanish Goya Awards ceremony took place on 11 February 2023, and this year Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beasts triumphed, winning nine awards:

- Best Director
- Best Actor for Denis Ménochet
- Best Supporting Actor for Luis Zahera
- Best Original Screenplay
- Best Editing
- Best Original Score
- Best Cinematography
- Best Sound
Additionally, the Goya for Best European Film went to Joachim Trier’s The Worst Person in the World, presented in Selection at Cannes in 2021.
European Film Awards – 10 December 2022, Reykjavík
The 35th ceremony for the European Film Awards 2023 was held on 10 December 2022 in Iceland, with this edition’s big winner emerging as none other than 2022 Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness. Yet other Cannes films scooped awards here, too:
