Tucked away in FarGo Village, Coventry’s bustling creative quarter, lies a cultural hub that’s more than just a record shop. Surrounded by vintage thrift stores, eclectic restaurants, quirky bars, vegan grocers, and even a comic book shop run by renowned artist Al Davison, Just Dropped In Records has carved out a vibrant niche in the Midlands’ music scene.

A Decade of Vinyl Culture
Founded by Alan Roberts, Just Dropped In has been going strong for nearly a decade, celebrating its 8th year in 2025. What began as a passion project has blossomed into a dynamic venue for live music, discovery, and community connection.

The shop stocks a diverse range of vinyl across genres—everything from folk and punk to ambient electronica—alongside cassettes, memorabilia, and music-themed merchandise. It has become a sanctuary for collectors, musicians, and music fans alike.
More Than a Record Shop
Live events have become central to the store’s identity, with an impressive variety of acts gracing its modest but spirited performance space. Shows span genres—folk, electronic, hardcore—and are carefully organised to ensure the protection of the store’s record stock while making space for audiences.

Its location—strategically placed between Birmingham and London—has made Just Dropped In a convenient midpoint for touring artists. When bigger venues aren’t available, bands are increasingly choosing the store for more intimate and meaningful performances.
International Acts and Local Buzz
The shop has welcomed a growing number of international artists. Oruã, an emerging Brazilian band formed in Rio de Janeiro by former members of Built to Spill, recently performed at the store. Known for their role in Brazil’s lo-fi scene, their set introduced new audiences to their raw and experimental sound.

Upcoming shows continue this global reach. On 19 October, Canadian shoegaze band No Joy, led by Jasamine White-Gluz, will be performing alongside TH DA FREAK, an alt-rock act from France. Later in the year, Vapors of Morphine—formed by members of the original American alt-rock band Morphine—are scheduled to play on 21 November, bringing their distinctive blend of saxophone-driven rock and blues.

Also on the horizon is Modern Nature, the British band led by Jack Cooper. Fusing folk, minimalist jazz, and psych-tinged indie, they represent a more experimental turn in the venue’s curation, drawing fans of the UK’s underground and avant-garde scenes.
Closer to home, the shop’s next event is a Pride special on 9 August 2025, featuring performances from Banofee, Taylor-Louise, and Freya Rose, hosted by Emmy McKissock. The event highlights the shop’s ongoing commitment to diversity, inclusion, and community-led programming.

The Crate-Digger’s Paradise
Many touring artists are record collectors themselves, and the store’s selection provides ample opportunities to browse between soundchecks. It’s a crate-digger’s haven, often sparking inspiration and rare discoveries.
Alan has noticed a surge in interest from younger visitors too, many of whom are discovering older music through platforms like TikTok and Instagram. “It’s like a library,” he says. “People come in not just to buy, but to ask questions, explore, and learn.” He’s often surprised by the depth of knowledge and curiosity from teens exploring everything from 70s krautrock to obscure 90s shoegaze.

Notable Performances and Big Plans
Just Dropped In has already hosted several celebrated musicians. Simon Scott of Slowdive brought his atmospheric sound to a sold-out set, while Andy Bell, currently back on tour with Oasis, drew fans to the shop after news of his appearance spread quickly online.

Alan has a few dream bookings in mind—Yo La Tengo, for instance—but admits that would take substantial planning. One upcoming booking he’s particularly excited about is Colin Newman of Wire, who will perform his electronic material in-store later this year.
“Sometimes a customer picks up a record,” Alan says, “and then finds out the artist is playing here next week. It’s those kinds of moments that make this place special.”
Building a Global Reputation
What started as a grassroots local project now attracts attention from across the globe. The shop regularly receives enquiries from bands based in Europe, North and South America, and beyond. Many acts now reach out directly, thanks to the store’s growing reputation for respectful treatment of artists and its passionate, music-savvy community.

Vinyl culture is thriving in Coventry—not just among nostalgic collectors but also with a new generation of fans. With its warm atmosphere and inclusive spirit, Just Dropped In Records continues to be a vital part of Coventry’s creative landscape—one record, one gig, and one discovery at a time.
