LOS ANGELES, CA – June 1, 2026 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced the establishment of the Academy Marquee Theater List, a new global award designed to celebrate the enduring tradition of moviegoing and recognize outstanding cinematic venues worldwide. This initiative aims to honor theaters that deliver exceptional audience experiences, actively preserve cinematic history, and serve as vital cultural hubs within their communities.

In anticipation of the Academy’s 100th anniversary in 2027, the inaugural Marquee Theater List will feature 50 theaters, with 25 selections from the United States and 25 international venues. A dedicated committee comprising Academy members from various branches will undertake the selection process, with final approval from the Academy’s Board of Governors.
Bill Kramer, CEO of the Academy, and Lynette Howell Taylor, Academy President, expressed their enthusiasm for the new program. “We are thrilled to launch the Academy Marquee Theater List, which will celebrate moviegoing and honor theaters that bring communities together through the power of cinematic storytelling,” they stated. They further added, “From classic movie palaces, to multiplexes, to independent cinemas, the Academy Marquee Theater List will recognize the best movie theaters around the world and unite our global film industry. We are deeply grateful to Governor Jason Reitman for sharing the idea for this program and to the entire Board of Governors for their guidance and support in launching this initiative.” The mention of Governor Jason Reitman highlights his known advocacy for cinematic preservation, including his involvement in efforts to save historic theaters like the Westwood Village Theater.
Eligible theaters must be brick-and-mortar establishments operating year-round, regardless of their location globally. They may showcase first-run films or repertory screenings. To ensure broad participation, a maximum of 10 theaters operated by the same chain or owner can be submitted within a single application cycle.
The evaluation criteria for prospective theaters are comprehensive, encompassing:
