Renowned as the ‘Master of Leica’, the work of late photojournalist, Ara Güler will be presented at the Saatchi Gallery this month (23 April – 5 May). Ara Güler, who passed away last year, was known by many as one of the greatest photojournalists of his time, working for TIME Life, Paris Match and Magnum Photos. Capturing the daily lives of Turkey’s working class through the years, Güler also worked as a portrait photographer, intimately depicting the most famous and influential individuals of the twentieth century.

The exhibition will not only place special emphasis on Ara Güler’s iconic images of Istanbul, but will give prominence to fascinating scenes from Anatolia and different parts of the world. It will also offer a selection of significant historical portraits, including Picasso, Dali, Aşık Veysel and Nazım Hikmet. The London exhibition will feature portraits of John Berger, Winston Churchill and Alfred Hitchcock, all of whom have left an indelible mark on the U.K.’s history and cultural life.
The Ara Güler Exhibition series is presented by the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey in collaboration with Ara Güler Museum, Archives and Research Centre founded by Doğuş Group. Following the exhibition in London, Güler’s work will be exhibited in London, Paris, Kyoto, New York, Rome and Mogadishu, respectively.
The inauguration of the very first exhibition will open at London’s Saatchi Gallery, on April 23.
