We all have a bucket list when it comes to travelling the world. It will come as no surprise that Australia tops the list, above America, Thailand and many more exotic destinations. From the Sydney Opera House to the Great Barrier Reef, Australia is a must-see for tourists all over the world.

Australia is the world’s top bucket list destination

Hoppa, a company providing holiday taxis abroad, researched the most popular cities, countries and attractions on our bucket lists. Let’s take a look at the figures.

Most popular bucket list countries worldwide

Australia trumps the worldwide country award with 26% of surveyors writing it on their bucket list, says Hoppa research. Tourism is a huge contributor to Australia’s economy. In fact, tourism drives the future of the country as over 9 million international visitors entered the country last year. That is 7% more than the year before! The USA wasn’t far behind Australia with 24% of surveyors and Canada at 20%.

Australia strikes again with Sydney as the most popular city in the world with 22% of surveyors marking it down. Sydney is closely followed by Phuket at 20%, New York City at 18% and San Francisco at 17%.

Phuket is one of the world’s most beautiful beach destinations. 9 million visitors travelled to Phuket last year to visit the coastal destination and its thirty white sandy beaches. If Phuket is on your bucket list, check out these beaches: Patong Beach, Kata, Karon and Kamala. You can even speed boat to the Phi Phi islands.

    Best attraction worldwide

The Great Barrier Reef is the most popular tourist attraction worldwide with over 2,300km of coral reef. Preserving this landmark is not just an environmental concern – it is a financial issue as well. Did you know the reef contributes $5.4 million to Australia each year?Great barrier reef hoppa graph

Brazil’s annual Carnival is on 18% of surveyors bucket lists, making it the most popular event in the world. Although, China’s Dragon Boat Festival wasn’t far behind at 17%, according to Hoppa research.

World’s top European bucket list destinations

Amsterdam is the most popular city in Europe for its art, canal system, seasonal tulip fields and fascinating museums. 19 million people visited Amsterdam last year and 35% of people put it on their bucket list.

The Scottish city, Edinburgh, is on 28.7% of surveyors lists. It’s not surprising either with the royal heritage and stunning castle views.

However, Greece is the most popular European country. Did you know Greece has, on average, 300 days of sunshine per year? It is a safe and hospital place as well.

Greece has ranked 6th globally ahead of Italy, Brazil, Vietnam and China. You just can’t beat the Greek sunshine on holiday!
