If you’re hosting Christmas for the first time this year, the chances are that around about now, you may be feeling a little overwhelmed by the responsibility and wondering how on earth you’re going to pull it off! Don’t panic – our beginner’s guide to hosting Christmas will help you get prepared and ensure everything goes smoothly on the day.

    Beginners Guide to Hosting Christmas

    Prepare Your House

You don’t have to overhaul your entire home or start redecorating but it’s a good idea to have a bit of a spring clean. Clear out anything you no longer need to create space and do a general tidy round and deep clean of key areas like the kitchen and bathroom.

    Christmas Shopping

It goes without saying that you’ll want to be prepared with gifts and Christmas cards so start your Christmas present shopping as early as possible to minimise your stress levels as Christmas approaches and reduce the risk of you forgetting someone in the rush.

    Stock Up

As a host, one of the nightmare scenarios is not having enough food and drink to go around so if in doubt, stock up as it’s always better to have more than you need. That doesn’t just apply to food and drink either, make sure you have enough chairs so that everyone will have somewhere to sit and enough bedding and pillows if guests will be staying over.

    Check Your Equipment

Check over the equipment in your kitchen to make sure you have everything you need to rustle up delicious festive cuisine for your guests. Replace any old, worn-out equipment such as pots and pans and upgrade to new woks and utensils to make life easier and ensure your dishes turn out great.

    Stay Well

Accidents can happen, even at Christmas so make sure that your first aid kit is fully stocked and have a small supply of over-the-counter medicines in case anyone becomes unwell over the festive period. Headaches and stomach upsets are common this time of year, as are viruses like colds and flu so it’s a good idea to have some basics to hand like painkillers, cold and flu remedies and indigestion tablets.

    Make Space In Your Freezer

You’ll more than likely have plenty of leftovers after Christmas dinner. To avoid waste and save money, you should clear as much space as possible in your fridge or freezer so that you can safely store your Christmas leftovers to be eaten later.

    Enjoy!

At the end of the day, the most important thing is that you and your guests have a great time so don’t put too much pressure on yourself to get it right. So long as people are enjoying themselves, that’s the main thing. If this is your first year hosting, don’t be afraid to create new traditions and try new dishes and don’t expect everything to be perfect – it will still be wonderful even if everything doesn’t go to plan.
