Bubble Schmeisis is a fun and funny 70 minute show about a man and his journey to get a Schmeiss (cleaning ritual at the baths).
Nick Cassenbaum is wonderful, and warm, as the Jewish man on that journey where he takes us through London (with the help of two musicians) to get to the Docklands Steam & Sauna.
He describes taking this journey from his grandfather Papa Alan’s gaff (home) near Edgeware all the way to east London. Many stops are on the way while he talk a bit about his life and many many Jewish customs, including Bar Mitzvah (rite of passage of becoming a Jewish man) and hilariously what is done (and revealed) once him and his crew get to the sauna. He also talks a lot about his Schmakiel (look it up) and how daunting it is to fully reveal oneself not only in front of his grandfather but also to the other named men in the sauna – it is a story we can all relate to! Cassenbaum is the perfect story teller, and not shy as he sheds most of his clothes. And near the end one of the show of the lucky theatregoers gets to participate in a sauna ritual experience with Cassenbaum! And he might make you Schvitz – Oy vey!
