For the 17th consecutive year, here is the programme of the Classic cinema section of the Cannes Film Festival.
Restored film copies, celebrations and documentaries are scheduled this year. Back to early 2000, when we did not know at that time that the connexion between contemporary cinema and its own memory would really change with the emergence of the digital world, the Cannes Festival created Cannes Classics which is a selection whose aim is to highlight the promotion of the work done regarding cinema heritage; a work which is done by production companies, beneficiaries, film libraries and national archives throughout the world. This has become a crucial component of the official Selection and the history of cinema and many other international film festivals did then the same. The Cannes Classics section presents masterpieces and gems of the cinema history through copies which have been restored. Not only does the Cannes festival have the objective to make the audience thrilled with the memory of movies, but Cannes Classics also wants to use the prestige of the biggest festival in the world to promote the memory of classic movies while scheduling classic masterpieces: film screening, DVD/Blue ray edition, broadcasting on platforms or VOD. The programme of the 2020 Cannes Classics includes full-lenght feature films and seven documentaries. As the Cannes Festival was cancelled, the Cannes Classics will be partially housed by the Lumière de Lyon festival that runs from 10 to 18 October 2020 and by the Cannes Rencontres Cinématographiques (23/26 November 2020)
