STUDIOCANAL has unveiled the first teaser trailer and artwork for INK, a new drama about the rise of The Sun newspaper under owner Rupert Murdoch and editor Larry Lamb, and its lasting impact on the news industry.
Wednesday, 2 September 2026: Directed by Academy Award and BAFTA-winning filmmaker Danny Boyle, INK explores the rapid rise of The Sun newspaper and the people behind its transformation, examining how its approach to news would ultimately change the face of journalism.
The film stars BAFTA winner Jack O’Connell as The Sun editor Larry Lamb, alongside Academy Award-nominated Guy Pearce as Rupert Murdoch and BAFTA-nominated Claire Foy as Jules Davies.
Boyle is known for films including 28 Years Later, Trainspotting and Slumdog Millionaire. O’Connell’s credits include Starred Up, ’71, Back to Black and Sinners, while Pearce has appeared in Memento, The Brutalist and L.A. Confidential. Foy is known for The Crown, All of Us Strangers and The Electrical Life of Louis Wain.
INK will receive its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival this evening, screening in competition in the Sala Grande at the Palazzo del Cinema on the Lido di Venezia. The screening takes place on the opening night of the 83rd Biennale Cinema.
The film is described as an explosive drama centred on a group of visionaries and misfits who set out to create a new kind of newspaper—one designed to give audiences what they wanted while ultimately influencing the world around them.
The screenplay was written by James Graham, the multi-Olivier Award-winning playwright and screenwriter behind Dear England, Sherwood and Brexit. INK is based on Graham’s Tony-nominated play of the same name, which was directed by Rupert Goold.
The film is produced by STUDIOCANAL, Media Res and House Productions. Boyle produces alongside Tessa Ross, whose credits include Conclave, The Iron Claw and The Zone of Interest, and Michael Ellenberg, producer of The Morning Show and Pachinko. Tracey Seaward, whose credits include The Two Popes, Philomena and Pistol, also serves as a producer.
INK reunites Boyle and Ross following their collaboration on Slumdog Millionaire.
Media Res optioned James Graham’s play, bringing the stage work to the screen in collaboration with the film’s production partners.
STUDIOCANAL has fully financed INK and will handle its worldwide sales.
INK UK & Ireland Release Date
INK will be released in UK and Ireland cinemas on Friday, 8 January 2027.
The film’s Venice premiere marks the beginning of its international festival run ahead of its theatrical release.
