Croatia’s delights extend far beyond its azure waters, as its colourful past and vibrant culture are evident all over. Its wealth of charming medieval towns makes it the ideal location for history lovers, and the areas of outstanding beauty attract those in search of an outdoor adventure.

Exploring the Balkan Paradise of Croatia

An escape to this sun-soaked country guarantees a memorable trip for travellers of all ages, and with plenty of direct flights from various UK airports, it is more accessible than ever.

    Coastal Gems:

The stunning Adriatic coastline is a treasure trove of picturesque towns and cities. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Dubrovnik’s Old Town immediately transports you back to its medieval routes.

The limestone-paved streets and untouched architecture have become widely recognised for their appearance as the Game of Thrones’ city King’s Landing. A fan of the series? Many companies offer guided tours to the most notable filming locations.

Further north lies Split, a former Roman capital home to the awe-inspiring Diocletian’s Palace. If you want to visit these two coastal hotspots, a Mediterranean cruise is an ideal choice for seeing the sights without the need to hire a car.

    Natural Wonders:

The breathtaking natural beauty ranges from crystal-clear waters to the kaleidoscope of colours at its national parks. Plitvice Lakes National Park is famed for its cascading waterfalls, turquoise lakes and lush forests. Whether you’re staying in Zadar, Split or Zagreb, there are plenty of transport options available to reach the park.

Krka National Park is another natural spectacle worth visiting. Its waterfalls tumble into the Krka River, creating idyllic spots that are perfect for a refreshing dip to escape the summer heat.

    Island-Hopping Adventure:

Explore the magic of Croatia’s abundant islands with a multi-day island-hopping experience. Choose from a private boat with a skipper to take you on a personalised excursion or join a guided tour to meet like-minded travellers.

Hop between Brač, known for its horn-shaped Zlatni Rat beach, and Vis, a laid-back island with unparalleled scenery.

Venture south and you’ll find Hvar, where buzzing nightlife and tranquil beaches blend seamlessly. Sail across to the olive-growing island of Korčula, nicknamed “Little Dubrovnik” due to its incredibly well-preserved medieval centre.

    History and Culture:

The country’s history is characterised by turbulent battles of empires, each leaving its mark on the modern day.

The ancient city of Pula is littered with Roman ruins such as the amphitheatre and the Forum.

It also hosts several cultural events throughout the summer, usually set within the walls of the arena.

The blend of Slavic, Italian, and Mediterranean influences makes it a fascinating destination for history enthusiasts and food lovers. Savour the tastes of fresh seafood and remarkable wines wherever you choose to stay.

While the initial draw may be the pristine beaches and cerulean waters, Croatia’s authentic charm lies in its versatility. A day can be spent exploring ancient Roman ruins followed by a walk through flourishing national parks, making it a dynamic and enriching destination.
