Europe continues to be a popular travel destination for those visiting from the UK with over 56 million visiting the continent in 2022. But, alongside the well-known destinations such as Greece and Spain, there are plenty of exciting hidden gems to uncover.

Five hidden European gems to explore

Whether you’re interests include culture, exploring lush countryside or historical landmarks, our top five picks offer an array of experiences for every type of traveller.

    The Hague, Netherlands

While Amsterdam might be the star of the Netherlands, The Hague offers a refreshing alternative with its rich history, cultural landmarks and coastal charm. Known for being the seat of the Dutch government and the International Court of Justice, The Hague boasts an array of museums, palaces and picturesque parks.

Scheveningen Beach is just a short tram ride from the city centre and provides a seaside escape complete with beach bars and quirky shops. The Hague’s blend of modernity and tradition makes it a must for those seeking a sophisticated yet relaxed destination.

    Vipava Valley, Slovenia

Slovenia is often celebrated for its natural beauty, but the Vipava Valley is one of the country’s lesser-known highlights, perfect for wine lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. The area offers some great trails, perfect if you’re planning on cycling in Slovenia, with routes for all abilities and incredible views along the way.

Visitors can also explore the region through wine tours, tasting unique local varieties like Zelen and Pinela. The valley is dotted with charming villages and its culinary delights, such as the Vipava Valley jota, are definitely worth sampling.

    Berat, Albania

Showcasing the country’s rich history, this UNESCO World Heritage Site features some beautiful architecture including the iconic Berat Castle.

Wander through the narrow cobblestone streets of the Mangalem and Gorica quarters, visit the Onufri National Museum to admire Albanian iconography and enjoy panoramic views from the castle overlooking the Osum River.

    Tartu, Estonia

Often overshadowed by the capital, Tallinn, Tartu is a hidden gem that’s worth a visit for any traveller seeking a lively atmosphere.

The city features the University of Tartu, one of the oldest in Northern and Eastern Europe. Wander through the botanical gardens, visit the Estonian National Museum and experience the vibrant café culture in the Town Hall Square.

    Valletta, Malta

Malta’s capital is a treasure trove of history and culture set against the stunning backdrop of the Mediterranean Sea. Take a leisurely walk through the narrow streets adorned with Baroque architecture, visit St. John’s Co-Cathedral to see Caravaggio’s two masterpieces and explore the Grand Harbour.

If you’re planning on a trip to Europe, why not make one of these hidden treasures part of your itinerary? It’s worth remembering though, like any travel across Europe, it’s important to check the latest government advice before making your journey.
