Gone are the days of munching on a rabbit’s diet in the name of vegetarianism.

How to eat out this national vegetarian week
From veggie sushi, to meat-free bowls of veggie goodness, you no longer have to go hungry when out in public because you can’t find anything on the menu that meets your dietary requirements.

To celebrate National Vegetarian Week (13 May -19 May) we’ve put together a list of some of itsu’s tastiest veggie options that are bound to keep you going throughout the festivities.

itsu is renowned for its vegetarian options, with a 40% plant-based menu.

They also have a selection of dishes for under a fiver – so not just healthy, but they’ll save you some coins too!

    No meat Mondays

Packed with vegetarian goodness, this sushi rice dish is rich in calcium which is needed for the maintenance of normal bones, and vitamin B6 which helps to reduce tiredness and fatigue.

The delicious bento box  includes, beechwood smoked organic tofu with a teriyaki glaze, sushi rice, broccoli, avocado, edamame, pickled red cabbage, mixed leaves, shredded carrot and seeds with spicy (no peanuts) sesame satay sauce.

Sesame satay sauceNutritionist Alix Woods says, “These superfood vegetables are high in antioxidants & essential fibre that feeds our gut flora or microbiome, promoting immunity and digestion. The teriyaki sauce adds a warming flavour-filled zingy combination of soy, ginger and honey, making it the perfect delicious accompaniment to complete the meal.”

    Veggie Sushi Collection

Delicious veggie maki, baby avocado rolls, and veggie dumplings on muki bean salad make for the perfect meat-free take on traditional sushi.

Rich in iron, edamame beans contain 6.37mg, making up 46% of your daily reference intake.

The peas and leaks in this tasty dish contain 840mg of potassium, 42% of your daily reference intake.

National vegetarian week 2019Products under £5

All itsu’s hot soups are under £5 and there’s plenty of vegetarian options, including their detox miso’noodle soup – a hot dish of detox steamed veg gyoza, crystal noodles, wakame, tofu and miso soup.

Vegetarian week 2019With 0.31 mg of vitamin B6, the miso paste provides 22% of your daily reference intake, which plays a role in the normal functioning of the system.

The dish also contains seaweed, which has 254.5mg of iodine, 170% of your reference daily intake which contributes to the maintenance of normal healthy skin

Nutritionist Fiona Lawson explains the benefits of seaweed, “From Japanese nori to Welsh laverbread, seaweed is a delicacy that’s been enjoyed for thousands of years. Our ancestors may not have been aware of the science behind it, but they intuitively knew that seaweed was a nourishing food. In fact, this special type of algae contains virtually all of the minerals that are found in the ocean.

“These minerals are essential for many bodily functions, but especially when it comes to supporting energy levels. Iodine, for example, is vital for thyroid function. Your thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland found in your neck. It may be small, but it plays a huge role in governing your metabolism and thus affects how vibrant you feel. Another valuable mineral found in seaweed is iron. This enables our red blood cells to carry oxygen all around our body, which is essential for keeping us bright, alert and full of vitality.”
