Looking to create some extra living space at home? Many homeowners find themselves in this situation, especially those that have started to work remotely. In this situation, a loft conversion is often the best solution and one that can be a lot easier and more affordable than an extension. It is still a major project, though, so here are a few of the main steps to take when planning a loft conversion.

How to Plan a Loft Conversion

Make Sure Your Loft is Suitable

The very first step to take is to check that your loft is suitable for a conversion as not all are. You will want to conduct a survey to determine if this project is possible – this will involve looking at things like the structure, height, space and the chimney.

    Types of Loft Conversion

If you meet all of the specifications for a loft conversion, you will next want to determine what the best type is. This will depend on the type of roof that you have, how you want to use the conversion and what your budget is. Dormer loft conversions are the most common in the UK as they can create enough additional space for use as a bedroom or home office although you will need a planning permit. Internal conversions are the easiest and most affordable and simply involve converting your existing space, which means that they can be limiting. There are then conversions that involve removing and restricting the roof – obviously, this will be the most complex and most expensive type, but will give you everything that you need.

    Tools Needed

There are a number of tools that will be required for a loft conversion. Milwaukee mitre saws will be the best way to accurately cut beams and other items that you will need include quick clamps, a framing air nailer and a tape measure.

    Building Windows

The idea of installing windows or skylights might be daunting, but you don’t actually have to make a lot of structural changes. Dormer windows are also a good option as they are structures in themselves with walls and a roof in addition to a window.

    Insulation

Keep in mind that energy efficiency standards have changed in recent times, so you want to make sure that you have sufficient insulation in place. This will depend on the type of conversion you opt for, but you always want to use high-quality materials to make your home energy efficient.

A loft conversion is a smart way to extend your living space and add value to your home. These are a few of the main steps involved, which should help you to get the ball rolling.
