FabUK: what inspired to be a fashion designer it’s one of the most competitive industry?
I’m not a typical fashion person, people would ask me if I’ve seen a catwalk show and I’d be like no. I think for me when I was young I just like dressing myself and having control over what I wore and I was quite tomboy-ish so my mum used to make a lot of our clothes, and I’d just want to change into what I wanted to wear. I like illustrating so in school I used to illustrate pieces and people would actually buy them and when I saw how that took off I liked it and I was like do you know what I actually enjoy this and people like it.
FabUK: who was your core inspiration when you created these designs?
A lot of it is through illustration, I always observe people and places and a lot of my research process is either looking through old photographs and or internet albums and galleries because I feel like you find a lot of stories in them as people document memories and I studied print and I do freelance illustration so yeah that’s how I translate it.
FabUK: what skill is necessary for a successful designer in your eye?
I think passion and dedication. Now you’ve got people like Virgil Abloh who’s the Creative Director of Louie Vuitton and he’s probably had people who’ve worked there their whole life who are trying to get to that point and he’s just come in and said I’m not a designer, but i have a vision, he believes in it and just went with it regardless of the industry standards and expectations and it’s helped him get to where he is. Just being authentic and skilling up! If you think I really believe in this but I don’t know how to do, that it can be as simple as self-teaching yourself you know watching youtube videos or going to classes just to give yourself more creative control.
FabUK: what is your personal style?
I don’t think I have a personal style, I think you’re always evolving as a person and so everything is always changing. There’s times where I feel like I want to be really feminine and then there’s times where I literally live in the same outfit for 2 weeks. I tend to generally go for comfort and things that are more unique. I don’t really buy things off the high-street that a million other people are wearing and I guess my fashion choices are becoming increasingly more conscious so just knowing like ok this is where this is from and this is who I’m helping from buying it
In the next five years I think just still doing what I’m doing and just having a brand that isn’t just about having clothes and dressing people, because I’m also an illustrator so technically an artist. I just think that when I limit myself to this I don’t want to be just limited to making clothes, I want to be able to merge what I’m doing with my love of illustration and just build a brand which is kind of like a community hub and so it’s more lifestyle and where people are involved and not just buying or looking at the collection but knowing the things that go on behind the scenes like the sustainability element of what I do and just looking at how we can make fashion and art combined more beneficially to society as appose to putting limitations on it.
