Jonny Woo is a London Living Legend. He’s been entertaining audiences for decades, and every time he has a show at Soho Theatre I always make it a point to go see him. Well he’s back so it’s time to book tickets.
His new show is called Jonny Woo: Suburbia. And it’s described by the PR people as ‘not just a show, but a heartfelt and hilariously entertaining journey through the formative moments that shaped one of the most vibrant voices in the LGBTQ+ scene.’ On the show poster it’s described as ‘a poetic memoir charting his life from childhood in Medway, to New York club to queer community in London.’ Well the show is a bit of both, plus we also get a bit Thatcher and Eurovision.
With Johnny on stage solo, along with a plethora of used gowns and dresses that he says he obtained via his friend Tasty Tim’s neigbhors late friend who was a cross dresser, Woo ruminates about his life through song, a bit of dance, jokes, and in Jonny Woo style plenty of nudity (his) with a finale that may or may not shock you, but if you know Johnny then you’ll know how this show will end. And the stories behind the dresses he wears onstage is heartfelt, as well are the stories surrounding him being a man of a certain age, being gay, and the stigma of HIV in the gay community – it’s quite a journey.
At 70 minutes, ‘Johnny Woo Suburbia’ is like a jar of peanut butter: you know what you’re getting but every bite is delicious and decadent.
