A hard to believe true story that took place in 1981 in Skidmore, Missouri is brought to the stage in the very dramatic and thrilling theatre production called ‘KenRex.’

It’s a story that not many people know about. At the age of 47, Ken Rex McElroy was shot and killed by several citizens of the smalltown, which is nestled in the rolling hills of northwest Missouri. Why you might ask? Skidmore was a bully, a criminal, a thief, had an explosive temper, was accused of assault, statutory rape, arson, cattle and hog rustling, burglary and attempted murder. He intimidated the townspeople to no end. Unbelievably he was convicted only once because he had an excellent lawyer. And even more unbelievable is that actor and playright Jack Holden plays not just Ken but many other characters in this show (lawyers, the wife of Ken, several townspeople, police) – it’s a tour de force performance that will mesmerize and perhaps frighten you. Holden, who is also credited as the co-writer of this show (along with Ed Stambollouian), also adapted ‘The Line of Beauty’ which played to sold out audiences a couple months ago at London’s Almeida Theatre. Holden also wrote and performed in ‘Cruise’ – a musical odyssey through Soho and the AIDS crises of the 1980’s which was Olivier award nominated. Is there anything this man can’t do?
John Patrick Elliott provides the live music for this show. It is at times subtle, loud, jarring, Americana, and very appropriate for a show like this. Holden’s performance will keep you spellbound for the duration of this show. It’s a story that is hard to believe but true, as is Holden’s spectacular performance.
KenRex is now playing until Feb. 1st at the Other Palace Theatre near Victoria Station in London.
