It’s quite a religious experience watching ‘Marie & Rosetta,’ which is now being performed at the Soho Place Theatre.

Performed is the word because even though this show is a play/musical about the true story of the relationship between Sister Rosetta Tharpe (Beverly Knight) – the ‘godmother of rock n roll’ who influenced Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash – and her singing partner Marie Knight (Ntombizodwa Ndlovu) – this two hour production showcases Knight’s and Ndlovu’s spiritual voices and the beautiful songs they sing.
Taking place in a church in America’s Deep South in 1946 (where racial discrimination was normal), Marie and Rosetta discuss their lives, relationships, and some gossip on the stage in the round where a very large lit up cross hangs over nearby (watch the swear words!). There’s a coffin at the opposite side of the stage – a presence that’s always there and explained near the end – as we are treated to beautiful uplifting songs and voices.
Newcomer Ndlovu matches the oh so powerful Knight, note by note (when Ndlovu sings ‘Were you there’ it’s moving and powerful). Knights’ powerful vocal skills are on show at full force and she almost completely takes over the 2nd half – plus her rendition of ‘I Looked Down the Line’ will have you on your knees in a prayerful position. And it’s lovely to see the Olivier award winning Knight on stage – she always has a holier than though presence and look (which she probably acquired from her time on ‘Sister Act’).
‘Marie & Rosetta’ is all about Knight and Ndlovu and really showcases their talents. While Ndlovu is one to watch, the show does what it says on the tin – it raises the roof! And after the show you’ll feel just like you do after Sunday mass; uplifted, spiritual, happy and time well spent.
Now playing until April 11, 2026
