London’s largest festival of fashion, Pure London, and British fashion commentator, activist and Professor of Diversity Caryn Franklin M.B.E. MSc (Psych) MBPsS, are joining forces to advance the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, also known as the Global Goals, by launching the Power of One campaign and a set of pledges they are inviting the industry and individuals to adopt.

Designed to galvanise the fashion industry into making it more ethical and sustainable, Power of One champions individual actions and invites small changes in the way we produce, consume, and reuse clothing to collectively make a substantial difference to the effect we are having on the world, the people living and working in it and our natural environment.

In 2015, world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for a better world by 2030. These goals have the power to end poverty, fight inequality and stop climate change. Pure London and Caryn Franklin are kick-starting a movement to drive individual change in the fashion industry. Fully aligned with Goal 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, the Power of One campaign aims at making sustainability the new normal.

Caryn franklin pure london power of one b&wJulie Driscoll, Managing Director of Pure London says; “Guided by the Global Goals, and in particular Goal 12 targeting Responsible Consumption and Production, we want to give people the power to speak up, to make a small change towards a better future, without having to take the full force. Whether it’s giving up plastic spoons or recycling old clothes, it’s about taking baby steps and making one achievable change. We want to drive awareness of the changes individuals and companies within the fashion supply chain can make. We want to start a movement. The Power of One and our pledges will show how thousands of individual acts really can and will drive change. Activist, disruptor and feminist Caryn is the perfect partner to support and help champion this campaign and challenge fashion behaviours and processes.”

Theglobalgoals icons color goal 12Pure London, guided by Global Goal 12 for Responsible Consumption and Production, has developed five easy to adopt pledges and would like everyone to share their pledge and the power of their voice across social media.

TURN IT DOWN – covering temperature control and washing clothes on a lower setting
GET DIRTY – wear more and wash less, showers over baths to reduce water and wastage
PASS IT ON – recycling and upcycling, donating clothes and participation in acts of kindness (kindness is contagious)
ETHICOOL – pledges positioned towards creating a more ethically and environmentally friendly world
ACTUALLY I CAN – empowerment to make a stand and make a change. No voice is too small

Caryn Franklin, who will give a keynote address at Pure London on Monday 23rd July, says; “Actually I Can. We need to stop worrying about being told we’re not doing enough or everything to improve our world, when a group of people start making small changes it can make a big difference as the initiative gains momentum and support. No voice is too small. We need to discard the taboos, to take a 360-degree approach to sustainability and what it means. How good leadership, diversity (in front of and behind the lens), kindness and ethics leads to higher productivity, creativity, satisfaction and stability which in turns leads to higher profits and a better future for all.”

Taking place at London Olympia from the 22nd – 24th July, Pure London will offer visitors a festival of fashion – bringing together a strongly edited collection of over 700 global brands, including some of the best-emerging designers showcasing their latest collections in the UK for the first time. Exclusive SS19 future trend insights will be delivered by WGSN and catwalk shows, now including childrenswear, will bring the season’s key looks to life. For three days visitors will be immersed into the world of fashion with a host of exciting guest speakers, workshops and networking opportunities.
