In celebration of Black History Month in the UK, the British Fashion Council is highlighting the Black fashion community as part of the London Fashion Week platform. This week features designers Catherine Hudson, Gravalot and Wales Bonner.
Hudson’s work centres on the experience of the Black British diaspora through the theme of displacement. In June 2020 her graduate collection entitled ‘Cool Rasta’ was featured in SOLASTA by Charles Jeffrey in collaboration with UK Black Pride.
Gravalot is an Afro-Contemporary menswear label rooted in the historical exploration and progression of Black cultures. Garments are crafted with local artisans and are adapted into contemporary designs for the modern day.
Grace Wales Bonner launched her eponymous label in 2014, following her graduation from Central Saint Martins. Bonner’s work is informed by broad research encompassing critical theory, musical composition, literature and history. The collection’s embrace of multiplicity of perspectives via a hybrid of European and Afro-Atlantic approaches.
