If you are planning on a European holiday anytime soon, one city you should add to your bucket list is Brussels. The ancient capital of Belgium features a wealth of magnificent old-world architecture, scenic parklands, delicious food and amazing cultural events. In addition, Brussels is a modern cosmopolitan city with plenty of activities to enjoy. Here are some of the main reasons why a visit to Brussels should be at the top of your travel plans.

The Top Five Things to See and Do in Brussels

    1. Take a Train Trip to Brussels

Wherever you are in Europe, it is incredibly easy to get around thanks to its extensive rail network. Forget the airport: a train trip to Brussels is the best way to visit the Belgian capital. Not only is scenic train travel affordable and comfortable, it is also very environmentally friendly. Simply purchase a train ticket and relax in comfort as you watch the Belgian countryside go by.

    2. Stroll Around the Grand-Place At

the heart of Brussels lies its magnificent city square known as the Grand-Place. Dating back as far as the 11th century, this square is surrounded by magnificent Baroque and Neo-Gothic style architecture that well and truly lives up to the name “grand”. Today the Grand-Place is both a UNESCO Heritage site and the cultural heart of Brussels, sometimes featuring multiple festivals and events in one day. Take some to explore the surrounding area and immerse yourself in its history and culture.

    3. Marvel at the Atomium

While Brussels is filled with amazing classical sculptures and architecture, one of the most unique landmarks is less than a century old. The Atomium is one of the tallest buildings in Brussels and features nine spheres made of solid steel connected into the shape of a giant iron atom. The building was originally constructed for the 1958 World’s Fair, and today houses a museum, a restaurant, and an observation platform with amazing views of the city.

    4. Explore the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts

Featuring one of the finest collections of artworks in Europe, the Musées Royaux des Beaux-Arts (Royal Museums of Fine Arts) is a must-see for art lovers. The collection of six museums features both classic and modern. Of particular note is the collection of paintings by the Flemish Old Masters, such as Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck and Pieter Bruegel. Be sure to allow plenty of time for a leisurely stroll through these museums so you can truly appreciate this fine collection.

    5. Dine Like a Belgian

Belgium is famous for its cuisine, and there are many options for fine wining and dining in Brussels. Pay a visit to the famous Café Belga for some delicious local food and a vibrant local atmosphere. Try one of the local delicacies such as moules-frites, a popular dish that combines spiced mussels with French fries. For dessert, try authentic Belgian waffles, available throughout the city, with any combination of delicious toppings. Finally, Belgium is famous for its beers, and connoisseurs should consider a tour of the city’s many old breweries to sample their wares and learn about their history.
